MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Despite the wet and windy weather, we have had another marvellous month of working and learning together at Palmerston P.S. Students enjoyed the Westario Conservation and Electrical Safety presentations and our older students received a powerful anti-bullying message by Holocaust survivor Eva Olssen. Some primary and Junior students have enjoyed working with our reading tutor to practise their reading and comprehension skills. Many of our students participated in cross country running and soccer and we are delighted to let you know that they demonstrated excellent sportsmanship as well as athleticism and represented Palmerston P.S. extremely well. Some of our outstanding students were recognized for consistently showing compassion and for the next two months staff will be explaining ‘Fairness’ and looking for students diplaying this character trait. Some classes have enjoyed and learned through trips to the

Wawanosh Nature Centre and all Kindergarten classes visited the Pumpkin Patch. Individual student and class pictures have been taken and there will be a picture re-take day announced later this fall.

Staff have also been busy learning at Palmerston P.S. Many staff have been trained in the use of the defibrillator and in C.P.R. As a result our school has received a defibrillator for our school’s use. Palmerston P.S. has a focus on Mathematics instruction and assessment this year and our professional development on October 26 th was devoted to this subject.

Palmerston School Council met on October 29 th and they have generously supported necessary repairs for the creative playgound and more technology for the school. Our School Council parents organized the Hallowe’en Dance-athon for students from JK to grade 8 and students really enjoyed the dances and treats. We truly appreciate all of the support from our parents. School Council meetings are held on the last Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and parents are welcome.

CROSS COUNTRY MEET

On October 18 th , our Palmerston cross country running team participated in the Upper Grand District School

Board’s area meet held in Mount Forest. Our team demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, skill, and spirit throughout the day.

INTERMEDIATE SOCCER

The Intermediate girls and boys soccer team made P.P.S. extremely proud when they competed in the North

Wellington soccer tournament on October 4 th and 5 th . They also played with a great deal of sportsmanship. They worked very well as a team, with all players contributing. They encouraged one another throughout the day. Great job!

BILLETS FOR BUS STUDENTS

Buses will not run early when weather deteriorates during the day. In situations where buses could not safely bring children home at the end of the day, the school needs to have an alternate plan for bus students. All parents are asked to complete the attached sheet to indicate your wishes regarding the billeting of your child(ren). Parents of students who walk to school are asked to indicate if they are willing to billet one or two bus students.

HEAD LICE

Please check your children at home on a very regular basis. We will continue to notify all parents of students in classes where cases of head lice are reported. As a courtesy, school council would like to put together a team of volunteer parents who would be available for class head checks. If you are interested leave your name with the office or a member of our School Council.

JUMP AND QUEBEC TRIPS

Plans are underway for students in Grade 8 to go to Quebec in June and they have their fundraising for these trips will be starting in the near future.

Get Your Flu Shot

November 2012

The flu is a respiratory illness that spreads quickly from person to person.

Common flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle pain, joint pain, and weakness.

The flu is more serious for the very young and elderly. They can get the flu from school aged children who don’t seem sick but may have a mild case. Get your free flu shot. It protects everyone. Visit www.wdgpublichealth.ca

to find a flu clinic near you.

If you don’t like needles, there's an alternative called FluMist®. FluMist is a nasal spray available for children and adults ages 2 to 59. FluMist® is not available at drop-in clinics – call 1-800-265-7293 to make an appointment. Because FluMist isn’t publicly funded, there is a cost of $20.
