This unprecedented one-day Symposium will rethink the future stage in the steadily evolving field sustainable construction education and research in NYS, the
SUNY system and elsewhere.
Forward-thinking stakeholders who are concerned about the impacts of sustainability on construction are invited to join this collaborative effort and initiate a
series of dialogues for the needs of the education, research, and scholarly cutting-edge state of sustainable construction. The Symposium will cover a wide range
of the current practices as a launching pad for the process of answering the many questions about sustainability in the context of construction instruction,
research, and scholarly endeavors, stimulating a pragmatic approach to the various scales of the future supporting concepts and themes.
To accommodate effective discussions and interactions, the one-day Symposium is organized and will be conducted with priority given to maximize motivating and
stimulating key dialogues among the participants that will push forward the state of academic sustainable construction.
At the conclusion of the conversation, a summary of the outcomes will provide a planning roadmap laying out the steps needed to produce the next generation of
sustainable construction curricula and research.

Objective:
The primary objective of this symposium is to invigorate and heighten the NYS construction educational programs and profession by enhancing our understanding
of the common multi-institutional inevitable modern challenges for the future of sustainable construction in the 21st century. The main goals for this synergetic
discourse are:
Assess the current academic construction practices taught in the SUNY system
Identify the relevant environmental issues to the construction education
Identify the key industrial needs from academia regarding sustainable construction
Identify new promising trends for educational and scholarly services in this field
To achieve these goals, the Symposium shall conceptualize briefly, yet realistically holistic, sustainability in the context of construction areas that point NY
institutions in new directions that will enhance and leverage the SUNY leadership strengths in the 21st century. It will be a vehicle by which we shall articulate,
synthesize, and marshal the pertinent multi-perspective interdisciplinary causality and insights that need to be established in the State of NY and elsewhere.
Keynote Speakers
Construction Education & Research Perspective:
1. Dr. Amit Bandyopadhyay, Distinguished Service Professor and Chair, the Department of Architecture & Construction Management, SUNY - Farmingdale State College
2. Professor Jeffrey K. Marshall, Chair, Construction Management Engineering Technology, SUNY - Alfred State College
Construction Sustainability and Practice Perspectives:
3. Stephen C. Beck, LEED, Director - Project Solutions Group, LeChase Construction Companies
4. Greg Fehrman, Construction Project Engineer, the C&S Companies
5. Joseph W. Delaney, P.E., CCM; General Manager, C&S Design Build, Inc.
Outcomes:
By the conclusion of this Symposium, some of the anticipated successful benefits include the following:
1. Enhanced awareness of the sustainability in the context of construction education.
2. Better understanding and acquaintance of the coherent intercampus challenges, needs, promising trends and opportunities for pertinent current and future
sustainable construction instruction, research, and service in the SUNY system.
3. Established consensus strategic view among the SUNY institutions on sustainability in relation to academic construction. This is a key factor for coherent
development and growth across the SUNY system and for the individuals who will articulate the view for the 21st century. In addition, it is a vital key for
garnering and heightening broader visibility, leadership, and recognition for the SUNY’s construction institutes.
4. Meeting the stakeholders’ needs by closing the gaps in the modern construction profession via increasing and enhancing the effectiveness of the academic
practices.
5. Ascertain the industry’s views of sustainable construction and how best to promote them effectively in the SUNY system.
