ESF OUTREACH SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry ESF OUTREACH 219 Bray Hall SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry 1 Forestry Drive Syracuse, New York 13210-2784 Peach Bark Beetle A Region's Black Cherry Resource Under Siege Peach Bark Beetle Workshop The Peach Bark Beetle has been recognized as a pest in commercial fruit orchards since the mid-1800s. The potential to degrade healthy black cherry trees as a result of overwintering galleries was first reported in 1964. Infestation levels were fairly light until the 1990s when foresters and forest owners started observing extensive gumming due to the boring beetle. Given black cherrys status as one of the most valuable commercial species in the region, it is critical that forest resource managers better understand and are prepared to deal with the current outbreak.
