For the last 25 years, the New York utilities have been the industry leaders in research and development of Integrated
Vegetation Management practices for electric transmission rights-of-way. This research has resulted in policies and
procedures that utilities across the nation are now adopting. The purpose of this workshop is to share this progress
with the New York regulatory community, and renew a dialogue with them about environmental and management
challenges facing utilities today and tommorrow.
Audience: Utility Foresters and Environmental Analysts, Regulatory Agencies, and Universities
Dress: June 12- Business casual; June 13- outside activities planned. Dress for the weather.
Workshop Location: Desmond Hotel and Conference Center, 600 Albany Shaker Road, Albany, NY, is located off
the Adirondack Northway (I-87) at Exit 4. (Exit 4 is also Albany Airport exit). Directions/Map will be sent with
registration confirmation.

About the Speakers
Kenneth Finch, Director of Forestry at Niagara Mohawk. Following the Army and a tour with Asplundh Tree
Company, Ken joined Niagara Mohawk as a Forestry Foreman and has risen through the ranks to become the
Company's top forestry professional.
Kevin McLoughlin is the System Forester at the New York Power Authority. He also worked for the Empire State
Electric Energy Research Corporation (ESEERCo) for many years in the environmental and land use area.
Richard Mider is the System Transmission Forester for New York State Electric & Gas Corporation and has 27 years
experience in utility vegetation management.
Craig Allen, Certified Arborist, with Niagara Mohawk since 1982. He is also a Certified Herbicide Applicator.
David Morrell is currently with the New York State Department of Public Service as an Associate Transmission
Facilities Analyst and has been there since 1991. His duties include oversight of utility ROW management operations,
and he has overseen the siting and construction of over 350 miles of gas and electric transmission line projects.
John Wainwright, Supervising Pesticide Control Inspector in the Division of Solid and Hazardous Materials at the
DEC. John has worked at the DEC for 33 years and in the pesticide program for 24 years. He has contributed to New
York's position as a national leader in pesticides regulation.
William Adriance, Department of Environmental Conservation Wetland Group. A 27 year NYS DEC employee, Bill
has 10 years experience in project review, environmental analysis, and permitting.
Kathleen O'Brien, Department of Environmental Conservation Endangered Species. Kathy has 16 years experience
at the DEC with 12 years in the endangered species area.
Steven Sandford is Chief of the Bureau of Habitat at the DEC. He oversees a 72-member statewide program that
works to protect fish and wildlife habitats.
Benjamin Mallard is a Research Scientist and Ph.D. candidate at SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry. He is
currently responsible for management of more than 15 vegetation management studies on power line corridors.
Christopher Nowak is currently an Associate Professor of Forestry at SUNY Environmental Science & Forestry. In
addition to teaching silviculture and forest vegetation management, Dr. Nowak has done extensive vegetation
management and biomass research.

early. Registrations postmarked after June 1 are subject to a $25 late fee. Simply fill out and mail or fax the

Accommodations: We have reserved a block or rooms for June 12 at the Desmond at $109 single/$121 double per
