Project Description
Research Needs and Plans
On a geueral level, all research projects thich a,regoing on now a,:rdin the future will
benefft from CSNET accessthrough the increasedavz, ilability of softwareflorn repositories'
Becausethese repositories a,reserviced by inlormation serversthat dispatch softwale via
electronic mail, rather ihan simply making softwaream, ilablefor copying over Teloet/FTP'
these'r€,luable services a,te now much more accessible. This kind oI accessoa'kes other
work more accessibleand moves the researchprocess along more rapidly by permitting
the use of public dornaio softwa, reto relieve the burden of producing the sa'mesoftwale
locally,
Specific research projecis tha,t would benefft flom new accessare se'veral' Michael
Jipping from our department is currently involved in two research projects' The first is
a joint efrort with ilvestigators from the University of lowa. It involves the performa'tce
a,ualysisaad simulation of concurrent algorithme on va.riousarchitectutes- Becausethis is
a projbct of sevelal researcberswho a,regeographically divided, the ability to commumcate
electronically is invaluable.
Dr, Jipping'ssecondproject is the colstructioDof a,rrintegrateddesigltenvironmentfor
co[current systems. Ile is currently ilvolved in designing a speciffcation laoguage for the
descriptions of conculrent system processesand concullency control. This environment

Australia)r Roger Schultz (University of Iowa), Mike Wagner (SiemeasResea.rch),Brion
Wenhardt (University of lowa), David Yalrl (Carnegie-Mellon Univetsity), among a host
of others.
Dr. Jipping has appliedfor supportfor his work to the NSF Division of Computerand
ComputationResearch, the SoftwareSysteosDivision. His proposaltitle is "A Meihodologr and Supporting Enviroament for Concurrent SystemsDesign," Proposal ID Number

the other thtee membersof the Computer SciIn additiol to Dr. Jipping's resea.rch,
eoce depa, rtmbrt are actively developing researchprogra,os for which accessto CSNET
will be extremely useful. This includes Dr. Hetb Dershem in the ffel& of probabilirtic
expelt systems, prograrnmiug languages, and geometric algorithms, Prcfessor Jim Slack iu
softwa.redevelopment environments, and Professor Gordon Stegink in computer graphics.

Anticipated Extent of Use
As described in the previous seciioo, CSNET will be used by all four Computer Science
faculty members. The CSNET will be used most extensively by Dr' Jipping aod his two
undergraduate resea.rchassistants. It will also be laluable to Dr. Dershemwho is prcsently
. writin! a textbook ir Progra, oeing Languagesa,od will use CSNET to keep abreast of
cunent resea, rchin ihis ffeld. Professor Slack pla.os to work oo a Ph.D. in Computer
Scienqestactiog iu 1988, speadiag a period of time at a University and then returaiog to
Hope College as he completes tris dissertation. Accesstp CSNET will be very helpful to
him duriag all phasesof this project.
The iustitution will benefit by haviag a more vita,l lesea, rchProgram io Computer
Scieoce. This will lead to bette! Pleparatioa of our students for graduate scboof increased
ability to attra.t quality feculty, a,ndiaproved outside fuadiag opportuaities'
The institutioo is committed to continuiug the eupport of CSNET membership after
the e4)iration of this gra,nt.
