February, 2015
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
Welcome to our February Newsletter. At Centre Wellington, preparations are well underway to have an exciting and
enriching Semester Two. February always brings decision
making time for students and families as it is time to make
course selections for the school year 2015-2016. Students
will need to consider their chosen pathway and the choices
that will lead them to the workplace, apprenticeship, college
or university. This is a particularly exciting time for our
graduates as they decide their next focus.
Please access our school website and our on-line course calendar for information about course selection. All CW students will be selecting courses on-line and parental input is a
crucial part of the process.
LINK: www.myblueprint.ca/uppergrand
Please don’t hesitate to call the guidance department if you
have any questions about this process.
January 13 we welcomed future Centre Wellington Falcons
to an information evening. Our excitement about our wide
and varied programs shone through loud and clear. Thanks
to all for spreading the word in our communities that CW is
a GREAT place to be.
This semester will also bring the Ontario Secondary School
Literacy Test for all of our grade 10 students. This test is a
graduation requirement and here at CW we will be working
hard, both in classes and in additional tutoring sessions, to
prepare students for the March 26, 2015 test. There will be
opportunities for students to challenge themselves in the
classroom, in the gymnasium, and through our many clubs
and other events. Please encourage your son/daughter to get
involved!
With the winter weather, safety on the front driveway is an
increased focus. Please obey the posted signs on the laneway and do not drop off or pick up able-bodied students in
the front laneway between 8:30-9:30 and between 2:30 and
3:30. The second driveway provides a safe drop off for student and frees the lane from congestion.
Punctuality is also important to us. Please help your daughter/son to be at school on time. Positive skills for the workplace are always important for present and future success.
We continue to bring in the best and the brightest to work
with our Centre Wellington students. This semester we welcome Mr. Burns who is joining our Phys. Ed. Dept. Mr.
Dow who is joining us in the Science Dept. & Mr. Hesler
who is joining our Math Dept. Remember to follow me on
Twitter for the latest news @cwprincipal

EQAO -- OSSLT
On Thursday, March 26, 2015, Grade 10 students will be writing
the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. The test measures
literacy skills across all subject areas up to the end of Grade 9. It
must be successfully completed in order for a student to graduate
with a diploma (OSSD).
Students have already written a practise test in preparation, which
has been assessed and returned. Key areas of need have been identified and students have been provided with strategies to help with writing the OSSLT. Further in-school coaching and mentoring will be
provided throughout the weeks leading up to the Test.
Students who may require further support have been invited to participate in the Pass The Test Program
(PTTP), which is offered at no cost. The PTTP one and a half hour sessions begin at 3:30 p.m. at
CWDHS on the following dates: February 23, 25 and 26; March 2, 4, 5, 9, 11, 12, and 23. All eligible
to write the OSSLT are welcome to participate.
Parents and students are also encouraged to review sample booklets of the OSSLT provided by the
EQAO, which can be located at http://www.eqao.com/Parents/Secondary/10/10.aspx?Lang=E&gr=10.

S.A.F.F.E. Committee News
CW Safe And Friendly For Everyone Committee is gearing up for "Day of Pink" on April 8, 2015. International Day of Pink is a day where communities across the Country, and across the World, can
unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobic, transphobic and all forms of
bullying.
A reminder to students that they can report bullying incidents in the Upper Grand District School Board.
Students can report through "Stop a Bully", an on-line bullying reporting tool. The bright pink "Report
Bullying" button can be found on the CWDHS homepage.
We are looking for any parents who would like to join our S.A.F.F.E. committee. If you are interested,
please call Heather Ginzel at 519 843-2500, ext. 313.
