So you have some questions? You may well have questions such as: Will I be safe if I switch to public transport or travel in a lift club with others? What are the rules of the road for cyclists or pedestrians? How do I hail a mini-bus taxi and what happens once I’m on board? Where can I find information about public transport routes and services? The Travel SMART website will provide you with information on all of these and more but here is a taste of what you can expect: • Forming a Lift Club: good reasons to do this, how to do it legally, examples of Western Cape service providers, safety tips and frequently asked questions. • All the information you need about Public Transport from information on routes, schedules and where to buy a ticket to how to complain, what the process is and what to do and not to do when using a mini-bus taxi. The City’s 24/7 Transport Information Centre provides information on Metrorail, Golden Arrow Bus Services and the MyCiTi service. • How to become Actively Mobile (using non-motorised transport). For cyclists: good reasons to use a bicycle, cycling safety, tips for choosing the right bicycle and gear, rules of the road finding out what cyclists and motorists want each other to know so that they can share the road successfully. For pedestrians: good reasons to choose walking and how to be a safe pedestrian, and the basic rules of the road, from pedestrians and the Law to crossing the street the right way. • How to be a Smart Driver: top tips from the City of Cape Town’s Fuel Efficient Campaign, how to track your fuel consumption, calculating how much it costs you to run your vehicle and the benefits of switching to a low impact vehicle. TRAVEL SMART BROCHURE.indd 1 2012/06/15 12:51 PM What is it about? How to be SMART Travel SMART options The Travel SMART programme is about getting you to shift towards more sustainable transport options reducing your travel costs, improving your health and lowering the impact on the environment. In particular, Travel SMART aims to reduce the number of cars on our roads carrying only one occupant (also known as single occupancy vehicles or SOVs). The Travel SMART programme provides valuable information about more sustainable travel options such as forming or joining a lift club, using public transport or switching to active mobility (non-motorised) options such as bicycling or walking. Now is an excellent time to consider at least one of the following options: Join a Lift Club Lift clubs are becoming increasingly popular in South Africa. While someone else is driving you can read, catch up on your social media, listen to music or join in on a conversation. Travelling to and from work is a daily activity at least five days a week. It is essential to consider alternative travel options to curb the ever-rising cost of petrol and parking as well as the time we spend in traffic and the knock-on effects it has on stress levels and the environment. Travelling alone in a car is not SMART • It is expensive due to rising fuel and maintenance costs. • It generates emissions that contribute towards pollution which affects the environment and your health. Benefits of the more sustainable options are: • Cheaper - saving money by reducing your fuel, maintenance and parking costs. • Healthier - boosting your well-being and health, reducing stress and enhancing productivity. • Greener - reducing your impact on the environment and your carbon footprint. • Better - by reducing your contribution to traffic congestion and environmental degradation you will contribute to a better quality of life for all Capetonians. Sustainable Transport • It is not energy efficient compared to other more sustainable forms of transport. We have done the research for you. Just go to our website and you’ll find all the information you’ll need - from how to find a network of existing lift clubs close to your home and office to legal advice and safety tips. Use Public Transport Public transport is cheap, more energy efficient than travelling alone in a car and a great deal more environmentally friendly. Just as with lift clubs you can spend some valuable time on yourself instead of sitting behind a wheel and coping with the aggravation of being stuck in traffic. On our website you will find useful information about public transport options, safety tips and where to find information 24/7. Take up Active Mobility (Non-motorised Transport) By walking or cycling to work you not only save money, but it’s a great way to get fit and reduce your impact on the environment. • It places a higher demand on our limited resources and increases waste products such as tyres, oil, etc. Our website provides information and important safety tips for walking and cycling. We also encourage drivers of motor vehicles to visit this section for important safety tips. • It contributes significantly to traffic congestion with the added need for additional space for roads and parking – space that could be better used. Be a SMART Driver In performing your official duties you may require the use of a motor vehicle. However, how you drive and maintain that vehicle impacts on its lifespan and our environment.
