BSNA Newsletter Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences September Edition 2015 Welcome Back Heart Walk New Student Orientation Welcome back sophomores, juniors, seniors and faculty! BSNA was pretty busy this summer. For the first time BSNA held a new student orientation and successfully answered any questions new students had about nursing school and what to expect during their new school year. Many of the new admits, both from fall and spring attended. BSNA board members hope that the new orientation helped students start the new year with less anxiety. Good luck to all students and staff in the coming year! On June 6th, 2015, the Nursing department walked hand-in-hand with the Health Sciences department and the Lane Center to raise awareness and money for heart disease and stroke research. The Heart Walk is an annual opportunity for the Southern Colorado community to come together, increase awareness, and raise money to help improve the lives of Americans while reducing deaths from heart disease and stroke. Our teams combined contributed $2,851 to this worthy cause (just short of our $3,000 goal), with the Nursing department contributing 25% of this total. Thanks all who contributed and supported us! Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo 2015 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo This year marked the 75th year of this grassroots event and the 2nd year that Beth-El students and faculty have volunteered. We were back to this event after making a great impression on the Rodeo Board and Summit Catering Managers last year. Volunteers worked alongside of Summit Catering in the VIP room to help stock the buffet line, fill beverages, clear plates, and provide excellent customer service. During the four nights of the rodeo, not only did volunteers have fun while representing our school, they also made great connections with many important figures in our community. Several volunteers met nurses at the event, including one Nurse Practitioner who gave out their card for future contacts. You never know who you might meet (and impress) while volunteering! Volunteer Opportunities Kidney Walk Blood Drive We are excited to announce BethEl will be hosting a blood drive with the help from Bonfils Blood Center. The drive will be in our own home (University Hall) on October 8th. Stay tuned for more details that will be announced at the next BSNA meeting. The Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences was fortunate to be a part of the first ever Kidney Walk hosted in Colorado Springs. Memorial Park was extra busy on Sunday, August 30th, with around 850 people. Doctors, nurses, transplant patients, dialysis patients, families, community members, and nursing students showed up on this beautiful day to support a worthy cause. Along the 5k course, eight senior nursing students set up education-stations to teach the walkers about different kidney related topics: Kidney Disease, Hypertension, Diabetes, and Transplant. The staff from the National Kidney Foundation, and Memorial Hospital were impressed by our participation, and they are looking forward to working with us again next year!
