The course then covers sequences and series. Finally, the course covers threedimensional analytic geometry (3D vectors, dot and cross products). The course meets for three hours per week with an instructor and twice a week in recitation with a teaching assistant. One recitation meeting is devoted to discussing questions over a lecture or a homework. The second recitation meeting is in a computer laboratory, where students learn how to use a computer package (Maple or Matlab) to solve problems that are too difficult to solve by hand. Prerequisite: Math 151 or equivalent. TEXT: Calculus: Early vectors, Preliminary Edition, by Stewart and TAMU Math Department COURSE WEB PAGE: http://calclab.math.tamu.edu/docs/math152 GRADING POLICY: Your grade will be determined by three common exams, a cumulative final exam, and a laboratory grade. The weights of each of these are as follows: EXAM 1 - 15% , EXAM 2- 15% , EXAM 3- 20% , FINAL - 25% , LAB- 25% Lab grade will be determined by weekly quizzes, Maple assignments and homework. If time permits, pop quizzes (unannounced) may be administered during a lecture, so it is important that you keep up with the homework assignments and pay attention in class. COMMON EXAMS Common exams are administered in the evenings, 7:30-9:30 pm. Information about common exams (dates, room assignments, and examples of past exams) can be found in Course Homepage (http://calclab.math.tamu.edu/docs/math152/). Dates of the common exams are: Exam 1- September 27, Exam 2- October 25, Exam 3- November 27. Final exam: December 7, 3-5 p.m., Heldenfels 111 HOMEWORK: Suggested homework problems will be given to you the first day of classes (they are also posted on the web page http://calclab.math.tamu.edu/docs/math152/syllabus/currenthw.html). It is very important for your success in class that you do your homework regularly, completing all of the suggested problems and practicing working with Maple. Visit me to discuss these problems and seek my help as needed. ATTENDANCE, ABSENCES and MAKE-UP POLICY: Attendance is one of your responsibilities for the class. I expect you to be in class every class period. Come to class on time and be a good team member by actively participating in it. Make-ups for missed exams or quizzes will only be allowed for the University approved absence in writing (see http://student-rules.tamu.edu/rule7.htm for details). To be excused and have the right to a make-up of a graded work, you need to notify me in advance or, if advanced notification is impossible, by the end of the second working day after the absence (in the last case you must provide an explanation why the notification before the class was impossible). In addition, a written excuse must be presented upon your return to class. Specifically, if you miss an exam or a quiz due to an illness or an injury, you need to provide a confirmation of your inability to attend the class that day from a medical care professional. Please note that an absence for a non acute medical condition does not constitute an MATH 152 Fall 2007 c Mila Mogilevsky August 22, 2007 2 excused absence. LATE WORK POLICY: No late work will be accepted unless there is a university approved excuse in writing. SOURCES of HELP. First, if you have a question, do not hesitate to ask before, after, or during a class. If you are struggling or just want to get an assessment of your knowledge before an exam comes, please use the following opportunities to assist you. • Office hours. I encourage you to attend my office hours to get individual help. You do not need an appointment to come to regular office hours. If your schedule does not permit you to come to the announced office hours, send me an e-mail with your available times and we will schedule an appointment. • Week-in-Review. Every week there will be a week-in-review conducted by Math Department faculty member for all sections of Math 152. Problems will be posted before each session. You will benefit the most if you work on posted problems before a week-in-review is conducted. See http://www.math.tamu.edu/teaching/operationspg.html for week-in-review information and schedule. • Help Sessions. The Mathematics Department offers help sessions for Math 152/172 students. See http://math.tamu.edu/teaching/helpsession/ for schedule and more information. • Streaming video. Go to Streaming video link at http://www.math.tamu.edu/teaching/operationspg.html to get one more opportunity to see how typical Math 152 problems are solved.
