ENERGY EFFICIENCY FORUM for Commercial Buildings Welcome 14 September 2010 Some laughs • "When I heated my home with oil, I used an average of 800 gallons a year. I have found that I can keep comfortably warm for an entire winter with slightly over half that quantity of beer.” • "Due to the current economic climate the "Light at the end of the tunnel" has been switched off. • Do you call a power failure a current event? • When we found out how much money could be saved by being more energy efficient we were ex-static. • Five year old to his Mom: Q: Where does the dark go when you turn on the lights? • A foolish gardener planted a light bulb because he thought he would get a power plant. • "If it weren't for electricity, we'd all be watching television by candlelight." The Energy Efficiency Forum provides owners and managers of commercial and public buildings with a platform for practical, shared learning and collective action. Efficient use of electricity has become increasingly important in view of steeply rising electricity tariffs and the medium-term shortage of South Africa’s electricity supply. The need to reduce operating costs, the risk of future power cuts and carbon emissions all add up to the urgent need for a concerted effort to improve energy efficiency, particularly for the larger electricity users. http://www.capetown.gov.za/energyforum A collaboration of: • S.A. Property Owners Association (SAPOA), • Eskom • The City of Cape Town (CoCT) Co-funded by: • Santam & the SA Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) Supported by: • Provincial Government of the Western Cape (PGWC), • Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), • Cape Town Partnership & Cape Peninsula University of Technology EE Forum: Evaluation • This is the 4th EE Forum Meeting held since September 2009 • At the last EE Forum Meeting in March 2010, 46% of attendees said it was the first time that they had attended; • 75% said EE Forum Meetings contributed to them making efficiency improvements in their buildings; • The kinds of changes made so far by attendees are mostly lighting and airconditioning changes; • More than 90% said the EE Forum motivates them to make improvements in their buildings or companies.
