Highest customer satisfaction: Eskom equips its power plant fleet with training simulators Reference – Simulator Instrumentation, Controls & Electrical SPPA-S3000 Individual Plant Simulator (IPS) is used for intensive and on-going training of power plant personnel. It provides a 1:1 replica of the power plant with the original SPPA-T3000 Human Machine Interface (HMI). The Company The Result ■ More flexible and efficient assignment of operators throughout Eskom‘s power plant fleet ■ Perfectly qualified employees for routine operation as a result of quick and comprehensive training ■ High availability through perfectly trained operators who can master fault event conditions safely and quickly ■ Homogeneous simulators at multiple power plants ■ Efficient and cost-saving validation and verification of plant modifications before the actual implementation The South African electricity public utility Eskom, established in 1923 as the Electricity Supply Commission, is one of the world‘s leading power producers. By generating approx. 95 % of the electricity used in South Africa and approx. 45 % of the electricity used in Africa, it is the continent’s biggest electricity supplier. Eskom generates, transmits and distributes electricity to industrial, mining, commercial, agricultural and residential customers and redistributors as well as neighboring states. The Task To satisfy South Africa’s rising power demand, Eskom has been extending its power plant fleet with new builds, refurbishments or re-activating decommissioned plants. Thereby, many of these plants were newly equipped with Siemens SPPA-T3000 Control System. Eskom’s operators now need to be trained and qualified for the new system. Eskom required a tailormade solution for its power plants, ensuring comprehensive and quick operator training for standard operation and to enable flexible allocation and relocation of power plant personnel where necessary. The simulator behaves exactly like the real power plant during operation, every kind of practice is possible. In Komati, the simulator is utilized for operator training. Three simulators cover all three variants of the plant’s nine units installed on a single SPPA-S3000 platform. SPPA-S3000 Individual Plant Simulator enables hands-on practice of various operational scenarios. Training is repeatable, so operational staff can become acquainted with routine operations and learn how to react safely and quickly even in the case of critical situations. Hence, high plant availability is ensured. With its SPPA-S3000 IPS solution, Siemens meets all requirements for effective and comprehensive simulator training, validation and verification of engineering data throughout Eskom’s power plant fleet. In addition to uniform training conditions and technology, the homogeneously-designed, single-source, SPPA-S3000 Simulators enable efficient utilization of employees throughout the plant fleet. Following the success in Komati, SPPA-S3000 Individual Plant Simulator has also been implemented at Kriel, Duvha and Camden Power Plants. Eskom equips its power plants with training simulators.
