FRONTLINE:
Nuclear Reaction
As your students have discovered, there are sources of radiation around them every day. In
addition, throughout their lives they will be exposed to ionizing radiation in the form of medical
diagnostic tools (x-rays, CT scans) and even medical treatments (radiation therapies). Show the
class a video clip from the television show “FRONTLINE: "Nuclear Reaction"” about these
sources is available from Teachers Domain. The Teachers Domain resource “Everyday
Radiation” not only includes the video clip, but also has suggested discussion questions. You
may find this video at the url:
http://www.teachersdomain.org/resource/phy03.sci.phys.matter.everyday/ or by conducting an
internet search using the key words, “video, teachers domain, everyday radiation”
After viewing this video, ask your students to complete the following worksheet either as
homework or classwork depending on your time constraints. Hold a class discussion on
students’ responses.
