Alternative Licensure Program University of Colorado Colorado Springs April 2016 Volume 5 Issue 4 CONTACTS Beth Cutter ALP Coordinator 719-255-4184 ecutter@uccs.edu Student Resource Office Advising appointments, application questions, signatures on forms 719-255-4996 education@uccs.edu CDE Educator Licensing Office Alternative Teacher Licenses (303) 866-6628 educator.licensing@cde.state.co.us INTERVIEW QUESTIONS Overall, the number of individuals completing educator preparation programs in Colorado colleges and universities during the 2014-15 academic year dropped for the fifth year, according to the state’s annual report on educator preparation. However, the number of individuals completing an alternative licensure program increased by 42%. Alternative licensure candidates now represent nearly a quarter of all completers in the state. We interpret that to mean that your chances of being called for a job interview this spring or summer are quite high. Devote thought and research ahead of time to prepare for questions like this: CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION & ASSESSMENT: (Tell us how you plan for instruction on a weekly basis. Describe the best lesson you ever delivered. Why was it successful? How do you keep students actively involved during a lesson?) CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: (Describe your classroom management plan. Give an example of techniques you have used successfully. A student becomes defiant and respectful – what do you do?) INTERPERSONAL: (You need to return a phone call from a parent who sounds upset. How do you prepare? A student confides, ‘No one likes me.’ What do you say?”) New Sample Standards-Based Units Available CDE’s Standards and Instructional Support team recently announced that more than 70 new sample curriculum units based on the Colorado Academic Standards in all disciplines are now available. These units, authored by teams of educators from throughout Colorado, include learning experiences, teacher and student resources, assessment ideas and differentiation options. Many of the new units focus on the middle school and high school grades. Visit the sample curriculum project webpage to see the full listing of new units available and learn more about the project. Attend ALP Orientation on One of Three Dates Mark your calendars and plan to attend ALP orientation from 4:00-6:00 pm on either May 26, June 29, or July 28 in Columbine 3022 (down the hall from the Student Resource Office). You will meet fellow members of your cohort, receive your Alternative Teacher Handbook for 2016-17, get briefed on important CDE deadlines, and hear an overview of how your “ALP year” will unfold. To help us prepare sufficient materials for this event, please RSVP to Beth Cutter (ecutter@uccs.edu) at least one week in advance. If you have never provided us with a copy of your Statement of Eligibility, please bring one. If you have already secured a teaching position for the 2015-16 school year, bring a copy of your contract and a signed Statement of Assurance of Employment. You only need to attend one orientation.
