Continuing Professional Development Courses for teachers from Mathematics in Education and Industry Continuing Professional Development The importance of teachers continually engaging with professional development is widely recognised in mathematics education. Effective professional development enables teachers to enhance their subject knowledge, to develop their teaching skills, to improve the quality of learning in their classrooms, and to keep abreast of changes to the curriculum. The professional development offered by MEI supports the needs of individual teachers, mathematics departments and the national mathematics community. It covers all examination specifications across the 11–18 curriculum. Practical activities are used to explore and reinforce the theoretical concepts. Short courses are designed to help teachers focus on specific areas of the curriculum, whilst longer courses support teachers in taking significant steps forward in their careers. All courses are delivered by experienced teachers who are actively involved in a wide range of aspects of mathematics education including curriculum development, resource writing and examining. All MEI courses provide on-going support to help teachers embed ideas in their own classrooms. This support may be face-to-face, by email, or in an online classroom. Many courses include access to dedicated online resources. Every course I have done and every resource I have used so far has proved endlessly useful, thank you! Meeting your needs MEI is happy to tailor short courses to meet the local needs of a host school or college. Recognising the difficulties teachers may face in attending courses outside school or college, MEI has also developed a range of courses designed for teachers to access online. Understanding how to improve your department can be challenging. MEI can provide a constructive external review, based around an intensive two-day visit. The review considers all aspects of your department’s work, particularly the quality of teaching and learning, and is presented in a detailed formative report. Sustained professional development Year-long courses with extensive support and resources to support teachers making the step up to teaching mathematics at a higher level. Teaching GCSE Mathematics (TGM) For teachers, including non-specialists, with some experience of teaching KS3 mathematics. Course participants benefit from a wealth of expertise, shared experiences and resources. Teaching A level Mathematics (TAM) This course, for those new to teaching A level Mathematics, may be taken either as a stand alone course or as part of a Masters degree programme. Teaching Further Mathematics (TFM) Designed for teachers of A level Mathematics, this course provides an in-depth introduction to the pure modules in Further Mathematics. Shorter courses Examples include: Introductions to A level Mechanics, Statistics, Decision Mathematics Effective use of digital technologies at KS4 Enriching the curriculum at KS3 I really liked the delivery of this course. It was lively, efficient and effective. These and other one day courses can be tailored to meet local needs. They include optional follow-up sessions in an online classroom. Online courses These courses focus on specific areas of A level Mathematics. The online sessions offer between five and ten hours of after school contact time with an experienced tutor, and allow opportunities for interaction and discussion within a small group setting.
