BRADFORD
YOU
THE FACTS
Welcome
Congratulations. By picking up this guide you have started a very long
and exciting journey, which continues far beyond your graduation.
At the University of Bradford our core values of Making Knowledge Work and of sustainability are
what will make your time here so valuable for years to come.
There are many sources of independent information about all UK universities, such as
The Times University Guide where the University of Bradford is noted for low living costs
(especially accommodation), lively campus close to the city centre and an excellent record of
graduate employment.
We have a tradition of almost 50 years as a teaching and research university, and are located in
the heart of the UK in the vibrant Bradford/Leeds city region.
Making knowledge work is not as simple as just helping you into employment - although that is
one of the University’s strengths. It means making your knowledge and skills work for the benefit
of the world beyond university, and making what you learn here work for you on a personal level.
We have a good track record for graduate employment, with most of our courses professionally
accredited, or closely aligned with business, employers and professional bodies.
For more information on everything in this guide visit our website at: www.bradford.ac.uk
FACT: The most recent survey showed that 91% of 2010 Bradford graduates went into
employment or further study immediately after graduation
(These statistics are derived from annually published data by the Higher Education Statistics
Agency (HESA), based on those UK domiciled graduates who are available for employment or
further study, and whose destinations are known.)
FACT: You will be taught by academics from around the globe who are knowledge creators, and
80% of those who submitted to the last official survey are doing world-leading research.
FACT: Enjoy state-of-the-art facilities for your studies, wellbeing and social life through our £84
million campus investment. There are also over 60 societies to join, and 30 sports to play.
FACT: Our campus is one of the most sustainable in the world, winning us the Times Higher
Education Supplement’s Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Award for 2010 and the Gold
award in the Environmental and Social Responsibility index 2010.
FACT: Dedicated teams are here to help you throughout your student life.
FACT: You will live, study and work with students from over 130 countries, in a city where around
67 languages are spoken.

BRADFORD
LIFE
City Life
Bradford is perfectly placed, right in the middle of the
UK, and with great transport links that mean you can
go anywhere you like with ease, whilst living in the least
expensive student city in the UK. Larger cities, such as
Leeds and Manchester are easily accessible and there
are trains and coaches to London too.
Meanwhile in Bradford itself there is art, music, theatre,
history and great cuisine from all over the world right on
your doorstep, and at little expense.
Bradford is famously a global city – the perfect place to
learn about other cultures, particularly during the annual
Mela festival celebrating Asian culture, and through
the many wonderful international restaurants. Voted
the most English city in the UK, in 2010, for its love of
cricket, fish and chips, and being home to the UNESCO
World Heritage site of Saltaire, Bradford really does
exude a cosmopolitan energy.
City Hall, Bradford
Lovely architecture is everywhere, from Little Germany
in the city centre out to nearby Haworth, which was the
home of the literary family, the Brontë sisters. There are
many beautiful parks in Bradford, such as Lister Park
which is just ten minutes from the city campus and next
to the University’s School of Management, which has
won Britain’s Best Park title.
Bradford was the first of the two UNESCO Cities of
Film (Sydney, Australia, is the other), and hosts an
international film festival, animation festival and horror
festival each year, with other film-related activities here
for you to enjoy all year round.

Other major attractions in the city include the acclaimed
National Media Museum, one of the most-visited national
museums outside London. For performing arts, the
Alhambra Theatre is a number one touring venue
offering top West End shows, alongside contemporary
dance, ballet and pantomimes.
Original David Hockney paintings can be seen at the
1853 gallery or you can browse round the shops at
Salts Mill, Saltaire. The Bradford Leisure Exchange
multiplex in the city centre has a cinema with 16 screens,
restaurants and tenpin bowling.
To support student travel around the city, the University
sponsors a free city bus linking the two railway stations,
bus station and the city centre shops with the University.
National Media Museum
Bradford is very accessible with
excellent road, rail and air links with
the rest of the country.
And Bradford is surrounded by some of the most
spectacular and picturesque scenery anywhere in the
country. The International Office also arranges regular
trips throughout the year to visit historic cities such as
York, as well as castles and stately homes, and visits to
the coast and countryside.

THE CAMPUS
The city campus is very close to the
centre of Bradford and transport links,
as well as being well equipped and
developing all the time.
New students will be among the first to use our new
accommodation, The Green, and the brand-new Student
Central where you’ll find social and study spaces,
venues, a shop and the Students’ Union. On campus
there is also a theatre, library, gallery and music centre.
There’s lots on offer at our sports centre, the newlyrefurbished Unique: Fitness & Lifestyle, including a gym,
25-metre swimming pool, a climbing wall and much,
much more, and all at very reasonable prices.
For more information about any of the above please
visit:
www.bradford.ac.uk/arts
www.bradford.ac.uk/music
www.bradford.ac.uk/theatre
www.bradford.ac.uk/unique
As well as all of these new facilities, there is plenty of
green space for you to enjoy on campus, the largest
of which is the amphitheatre outside Student Central,
which plays host to barbeques, sunbathing and events
during summer and to sledging and snowman building
in winter.
Students studying Management or Law-related
subjects are mainly based at the dedicated School of
Management parkland campus a couple of miles away,
which is home to both beautiful historic buildings and
highly sustainable state-of-the-art facilities.
There is a wide range of places to eat on campus, such
as the Atrium Restaurant in the Richmond Building,
which offers vegan and halal options, and there are
similar facilities on site at the School of Management.
There are also lots of other bars and cafes on the
city campus, where you can relax with friends over a
cappuccino.
The University of Bradford Students’ Union (UBU),
based in Student Central, is home to services for
all students.
From support and help to sports, societies and
volunteering opportunities, our elected student
representatives and dedicated team of staff work directly
for you as a student. Visit www.ubuonline.co.uk
Behind all of this is a commitment to sustainable living
that has won our campus the award for ‘Outstanding
Contribution to Sustainable Development’ in the Times
Higher Education Awards two years running. So you
can study safe in the knowledge that you are helping to
save the planet at the same time.

concept with a real community feel. It is set in beautiful landscaped gardens, with a biodiversity pond water feature at its

Choosing your accommodation
Much of your time outside your course commitments
will be spent in your new home, whether that’s in The
Green (the new Sustainable Student Village on the
city campus), a hall of residence like Vernon Barnby,
or in private accommodation. Bradford is well served
with suitable student accommodation within the city,
including a good selection of University-managed
Halls, as well as a good supply of private sector rented
accommodation.
You will be guaranteed* a place at our new student
village, The Green, during your first year, if you apply
before the specified time (full details are online).
* dependent on accommodation application and acceptance dates
The University offers a range of accommodation to suit
a wide variety of needs and requirements, in terms of
location and facility provision.
Pastoral care and support with
The Warden Team
A team of resident wardens live in The Green. There
will be two Senior Wardens and four Student Wardens.
Their role is to help students settle into university life
and provide advice and information. Each evening/
night and throughout the weekend there are Senior and
Student Wardens on duty to assist with any problems or
concerns students may have, and Senior Wardens will
hold regular surgeries on Wednesday evenings.
Types of accommodation at
The Green - City Campus
In total there are 1,026 student bedrooms in the new
student village – The Green.
The village is divided up into two types of
accommodation - Townhouses and Apartments. There
are 408 student rooms in the Townhouses and there are
618 apartment rooms.
Townhouses
The Townhouse blocks are best described as blocks of
houses, very similar to a traditional English ’terraced
block’. There are 34 townhouses, each of which has 12
bedrooms and six bathrooms. They have their own front
door and a back patio door leading to a garden/patio
area. Students have an access fob for the front door and
for their own room.
On the ground floor is the large open plan living space,
a kitchen, dining room and living room with direct
access to an external paved and landscaped area. On
each of the floors above there are four bedrooms and
two bathrooms, so two students share a bathroom.
Apartments
The apartments provide accommodation in clusters of
six en-suite bedrooms with shared kitchen/dining and
living space. The bathrooms include w/c, sink and
shower.
For students living away from home for the first time
the apartment cluster design provides a welcoming and
sociable environment, supporting an enjoyable and
educational student experience.
Provision for people with disabilities
The Green has been designed and developed with
full recognition of the need to provide a fully inclusive
student accommodation experience. The village is
fully compliant with the requirements of the Disability
Discrimination Act, and a detailed access statement was
provided as part of the planning process.
The University welcomes applications from students
with disabilities and has a number of adapted rooms
available in The Green.

The University awards a small number of scholarships
for academic excellence to self-financing EU and
international students undertaking undergraduate or
postgraduate studies. There is also a limited number of
scholarships for Countries in Crisis, and for Excellence
in the Community (including sport, creative/performing
arts, and volunteering).
Certain academic Schools also offer scholarships to
EU and international students. For example, the

many others.
For information on the different scholarships, criteria
and application details, see

Living Costs
When you’re planning your budget for UK study, it’s
not just course fees you need to think about. You need
money for accommodation, utility bills, council tax, food,
books, equipment and, of course, a social life. The UK
Border Agency considers that students living outside
of London will require approximately £600 per month
for their living expenses. For visa purposes, as a new
student to the UK, you will need to show that you have
£5,400 (9 months @ £600 per month) of money in your
bank account to use for your living costs, in addition to
your tuition fees for the first year of your course.
Most of our accommodation contracts in Halls of
Residence are for 42 weeks (10.5 months). The money
that you will actually require during the year will
therefore need to be adjusted accordingly.
The costs given are estimates, and do not include
any money for mobile phone/telephone costs, leisure
activities, or initial set-up costs of bedding, kitchen
equipment and warm clothing. But you’ll find student
discounts on everything from books, music and fashion
to movies and eating out. These expenses will vary from
one student to another according to your lifestyle and
circumstances, as everybody is different! Remember
that you will need additional money to cover these costs.
The amount of money that you need also varies
according to the time of year. At the start of the
academic year you will need to have access to enough
money to pay accommodation deposits and rents (it is
best to pay these in advance), and also to buy items that
you need when you first arrive.
If you have any questions about living costs, please

ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT
General English Language
Requirements
If your first language is not English, you will have to
reach a level of English approved by the University
before you can be admitted onto any of our
undergraduate or postgraduate courses. You can
show you have reached the required level in either
of two ways.
1. By taking an international English language test
such as:-
• the Summer Pre-Sessional Course
(10 weeks or six weeks)
• the International Foundation Programme
(two semesters or one semester)
• the IELTS Preparation Course (30 weeks or 15 weeks)
If you have lived in Britain or Ireland for at least three
years before you start your course, you may not need to
do any preparatory English.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
This is administered by the British Council and is
the University’s preferred English language test. The
University normally requires a score of 6.0*, with at least
5.5 in each of the four sub-tests (speaking, listening,
reading, writing). Testing facilities are available at most
British Council overseas offices. When you take your
test, you should ask for a copy of your Test Report Form
to be sent to the University.
For more information, please email ulc@bradford.ac.uk
or see www.bradford.ac.uk/sled/for-international-students
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
This is administered by the Educational Testing Service
in the USA. You will need to score at least 87 on the
internet-based test. If you take this test, you should enter
the University’s code 0828 on your answer sheet.
• Ten-week English for Academic Purposes (starts July)
* Students wishing to apply for most postgraduate courses in the School of
Management (MSc, MBA) should have a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL
95 (internet-based), for MSc courses in the School of Health Studies a
minimum of IELTS 6.5 with some courses requiring IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL
100 (internet-based), and certain postgraduate courses in the School of
Social and International Studies also require scores of at least IELTS 6.5.
Please check the requirements with the appropriate academic School.
English for Academic Purposes
(six-week or ten-week course)
The IELTS and TOEFL tests are the most common,
but other English language qualifications may also be
accepted. These include the Pearson Test of English
(PTE); and also the Cambridge Advanced Certificate;
Cambridge Proficiency Certificate; and GCE/GCSE
English language – all at grade C or above.

Academic English for Business and Management
This six-week English language and study skills
programme is designed for international students who
plan to study for a Master’s degree (MSc or MBA) at
the School of Management. The course comprises five
days of tuition each week on academic and general
English using specially developed courseware and
other material and includes lectures by School of
Management staff.
International Foundation
Programme (IFP)
If your first language is not English, you can choose
to undertake the one-semester (January - May)
or two-semester (October - May) International
Foundation Programme. The course is available for
undergraduate and postgraduate students who are
already academically qualified for their chosen degree
course but need to increase their competence in English
language. The programme improves students’ general
and academic English and familiarises them with the
study skills necessary for studying at a UK university.
The course comprises small group classes, independent
study tasks and subject-related projects. Students
are formally assessed in each module, through both
coursework and final tests. Successful completion of
the International Foundation Programme is accepted by
the University of Bradford as evidence of competence in
English for enrolment on degree courses. No further test
such as IELTS is required.
For more information, please email
learning@bradford.ac.uk
IELTS Preparation Course
Each IELTS Preparation Course is for students who need
to improve their academic English and obtain the IELTS
score required for study at a UK University. The 15-week
course is designed for those who have a score of at
least 5.0 at IELTS (with no component less than 4.5) or
equivalent, and who wish to upgrade their IELTS score.
The 30-week course is designed for those students who
already hold a score of at least 4.5 at IELTS (with no
component less than 4.5) or equivalent, and who need to
do some further work on general and academic English
as well as systematic preparation for the IELTS test.
In addition to focusing on the Reading, Listening,
Writing and Speaking skills tested in the IELTS
Academic English test, the course will also concentrate
on improving general language competence and
developing English for Academic Purposes (EAP).
For more information, please email ulc@bradford.ac.uk
Free English Language Support
Any students exceptionally accepted by the University
without the normally required level of English will be
obliged to take an English proficiency test. Any of these
students with a level of English below the required level
will be expected to attend a programme of support
classes. They will need to demonstrate satisfactory
performance in English before being permitted to
progress to the next stage of their degree course or to
graduate from the University of Bradford.
All students have access to free English language
support classes for the duration of their studies at the
University of Bradford to enable them to improve further.
Students can take a short test after enrolment on their
degree course to establish whether any additional
language classes would be helpful. The free English
classes begin soon after registration, continuing
throughout the academic year and at no extra cost to
the student. There are also drop-in sessions for students
at specific times.
For more information, see www.bradford.ac.uk/ulc

OUR ACADEMIC STRUCTURE
The University has grown significantly since it was
granted its charter in 1966.
During this time, its subject areas have expanded and have been divided into seven
academic ‘Schools’ which each cover a broad range of specialisms – the School
of Computing, Informatics and Media; the School of Engineering, Design and
Technology; the School of Health Studies; the School of Life Sciences; the School of
Lifelong Education and Development; the School of Management; and the School of
Social and International Studies. Six schools are based at the city campus, and share
many facilities, whilst the School of Management is a short bus ride away and is set in
picturesque parkland with beautiful listed buildings.
Your course will belong to one of these seven Schools, and will usually be made up
of tutorials, seminars, lectures and lab or practical work.
Read more information about the different academic Schools and their facilities
online: www.bradford.ac.uk/undergraduate and www.bradford.ac.uk/postgraduate
Our academic year runs from September to the end of May. The majority of taught
courses start in September (a few also have January start dates). Most of our
undergraduate courses are comprised of three years of full-time study. All full-time
taught Master’s and research programmes involve study over 12 calendar months.
International and EU students are encouraged to attend the special programme
of orientation events for International Students, which will be held throughout
‘International Student Enrolment’ and ‘Welcome Week’ prior to the start of term,
normally in the middle of September (see pages 43-44 of this Guide and check
with your academic School).

STUDENT VIEW
“I chose Bradford because it was the only university that was
offering this type of course in a format that I was looking for.
I have a qualification in computing, but I wanted to extend
my knowledge in telecommunications, the communications
industries and mobile technologies. I found the topics we
studied relate directly to the sort of things that are happening
in industry, especially in 3G and 4G networks.
We had access to very well-equipped, sophisticated studios
and laboratories, which is important because, on the Mobile
Computing MSc course, we developed software and systems
using the latest technologies. The staff are very friendly and
helpful; you are dealing with people who have accomplished
a great deal and become authorities in their subjects. I found
the staff to be a great inspiration.”

“I am a fun-loving person and my favourite place to hang out
on campus is Student Central, it’s a place to relax and have
fun. The best part about my course is that I get to work with
people as a team, which has made me a strong team-player.
Being a Course Representative has helped me to interact
more effectively with lecturers and students, and this has given
me a lot of confidence and independence. Bradford and the
surrounding areas in Yorkshire are very scenic and beautiful
and everyone is really friendly.”

“While an assistant lecturer in biological sciences at
the University of Sulaimani in Iraq, I was awarded a PhD
Scholarship by the Kurdistan Regional Government which
I chose to use to study here at Bradford. I am investigating
the role of prostaglandins in human hair growth. This involves
advanced biomedical techniques, including molecular
biology, cell and organ culture and lipodomics. I have already
presented my results at an international conference in
Canada. I have also taken useful Graduate School courses on
topics such as presentation skills and reference handling.
Everyone in the Division is very friendly and my research group
is very multicultural – English, Arab, Persian, Indian, Pakistani
and Russian! There are also good sports facilities including a
gym and swimming pool two minutes away. I like it so much
that I encouraged my colleague from Kurdistan to join me,
who likes it here too.”

DOCTORAL DEGREES
Award Duration
PhD 3-7 years
DBA 4-6 years
The PhD is a full- or part-time programme of research. The
PhD places you at the core of university intellectual life and is
an excellent preparation for an academic or research career
in business and management. The Doctorate of Business
Administration (DBA) is an innovative, topic-driven postgraduate
qualification, deeply rooted in professional practice, and is a
part-time programme of training, study and research. The DBA
is equal to a PhD, but the focus on professional practice and
applied research, which differentiates it from the traditional PhD,
makes it more suitable for senior managers looking to make a
significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge in their
area of expertise.

STUDENT VIEW
“I came to the University of
Bradford last September
for a postgraduate course
in Project Planning and
Management. Basically,
I am a civil servant and
have taken leave from my
employer for this course. I am
working as Deputy Director in
the ministry of Planning and
Development in the capital
city, Islamabad. I joined this
course as it is very much
relevant to my professional
responsibilities and would
help in career development.
A degree from a prestigious
university like Bradford would
help me to have an edge
over others to get promotion
and career growth. I am
enjoying the excellent
facilities here, and this is a
unique experience in my life.”

HOW TO APPLY
Undergraduate Courses
All applications to full-time undergraduate degree courses
must be submitted via UCAS’s (Universities and Colleges
Admissions Service) online facility, www.ucas.com.
For English Language requirements see page 14.
Full instructions and a downloadable comprehensive
guide called Applying Online are available on the
website. Alternatively, contact UCAS directly or your
nearest British Council office or similar centre for advice.
Courses start in mid-September each year but we
advise that you submit your completed application as
soon as possible, even if you have not yet completed
your previous course of study. We may make an offer
conditional upon your successful completion of a certain
qualification. For English Language requirements see
page 14.
For entry in September 2012, you can submit your
application to UCAS anytime from September 2011 to
June 2012. However, UCAS has set different application
deadlines for different courses, most notably 15 October,
15 January and 24 March. Applications received after the
course application deadline cannot be guaranteed equal
academic consideration. It is advisable to apply as early
as possible, especially if you are applying for a popular
course. For more information on the application deadline
for your course, please refer to the “Important Dates”
page on www.ucas.com
All applications are considered carefully and individually.
It helps us to process your application if the form is clearly
written or typed, with all sections completed fully and
accurately, and all relevant supporting documentation
submitted.
It is even more important to start your visa application
early as the process in some countries can be slow. The
University will send a Confirmation of Acceptance for
Studies (CAS) Statement to international students who
need to apply for a student visa. You will need the CAS
reference number to apply for your visa. You will need to
complete your administrative, immigration and financial
arrangements well before you leave for Bradford.
The majority of research students start in September,
but it may be possible to start with effect from January,
April or July. Typical periods of registration for full-time
research are 15 months (minimum 12) for an MPhil, and
three years for a PhD.
Special arrangements may be made if you are applying
from a college which has a partnership agreement with
the University. Your college should have more information
on this or contact the University’s International Office if
you think this applies to you.
If you are only applying for one course at one university,
it is worth bearing in mind that it is simpler (and less
expensive) to apply via UCAS.
The UCAS code for the University of Bradford is
BRADF B56.

Postgraduate
Research Courses
You will need to discuss your proposed field of research
in some detail with the relevant School which will ensure
that the University can provide the necessary supervision,
equipment and research materials.
Your initial application should take the form of a
completed application form and a detailed research
proposal (two or three pages). You should send this to
the contact name given for research in the appropriate
School.
It may be possible for students to undertake part or the
whole programme of research away from the University,
provided that suitable arrangements for supervision can
be made. This must be negotiated with the appropriate
Department.

PREPARING TO STUDY
Preparing to study
at the University
You have spent a lot of time and effort researching and
applying to the course of your choice. We have offered
you a place in the University and you have confirmed your
acceptance. Now is the time to start preparing for your
journey to the UK. There are many things you will need to
consider and prepare - a little forward planning now will go
a long way!
The University’s website offers advice and downloadable
brochures to help you prepare for your studies in the UK:
- for accommodation in Bradford, see
www.bradford.ac.uk/accommodation
- for pre-arrival information from visas to registering as a
University of Bradford student, see
www.bradford.ac.uk/international/pre-arrivalinformation.php
To help you start preparing for your studies in the UK, here
are some tips:
Travel Documents
Do you have a valid international passport or other
document which officially establishes your identity and
nationality?
Make sure you record your name on all your documents
in the exact same way as it is recorded in your passport.
Any inconsistencies in your documents may cause you
problems at Immigration, the University and at the bank, if
you wish to open a bank account in the UK.
Visa/Entry Clearance
Most international students will need to apply for Tier 4
(General) Student visa or entry clearance to study in the UK.
You can apply for your visa three months before the official
start date of your course as stated on your offer letter.
If you are from EEA countries or a Swiss national, you can
enter the UK freely and do not need to apply for a visa. You
can enter the UK with a valid passport or national identity
card.
Ensure you have the latest information on visa application
by enquiring at your nearest British Embassy or High
Commission. Alternatively, check the UK visas website,
www.ukvisas.gov.uk
If you are a self-funding student, you will need to show that
these funds have been in your bank account for a period
of at least 28 days before you make your visa application.
If you have an official sponsor who will be paying your
tuition fees and living costs (e.g. your Government), for visa
purposes you will need to supply an official letter from your
sponsor to confirm exactly how much they will be paying
for you. If there is a difference between the amount your
sponsors are paying and the amount required for your visa,
this money must be in your bank account for a period of 28
days before you make your visa application.
Your accommodation
Accommodation for new international students in
University-owned or approved Halls of Residence is
guaranteed*. You can find out more or apply for your
lodging through the Accommodation Office.
www.bradford.ac.uk/accommodation
If you wish to stay in private accommodation, Unipol
Student Homes is an organisation that the University
works with to ensure that private landlords meet certain
standards in the accommodation they provide and the
way it is managed. You can find out more at
www.unipol.org.uk/bradford. Remember that
accommodation costs will be a significant part of your
living expenses, and it is important to choose a room that
will be within your budget. All accommodation contracts
are legally binding, so you need to choose carefully to
make sure that you will be able to pay the rent for the
whole of the contract period.
*dependent on accommodation application and acceptance dates
Your travel plans
If possible, arrange to fly into Leeds/Bradford International
Airport (LBIA) which is about a 30-minute taxi ride from the
University of Bradford. Alternatively, there is Manchester
Airport which services more airlines but is much further
away.
Book as far in advance as possible for the best prices.
Arrange to arrive in time for the International Student
Enrolment and Welcome Week which normally starts in the
middle of September. If you are arriving in September, we
may be able to arrange to collect you at Leeds/Bradford
Airport or Manchester airport. Check with
pick-me-up@bradford.ac.uk for the dates on which
our airport pick up service will be running.
Financial Arrangements
Climate and Clothing
You should make arrangements before you leave home to
ensure that you will have enough money to pay for your
living costs and tuition fees. You can arrange to pay your
tuition fees, accommodation fees and living expenses either
in advance or on arrival using one or more of the following
methods - credit/debit card, bank transfer, cheque and
banker’s draft.
The weather in the UK is notoriously changeable! It is
helpful to have several layers of clothing that you can put
on or take off according to the changes in the weather. You
can buy warm clothing locally at reasonable prices, so do
not feel you have to use all your luggage allowance on this.
When applying for your visa, you will need to show financial
evidence that you do have sufficient funds to cover living
costs and tuition fees. For example, if your period of study
is 12 months or over, you will need to show that you have
enough money to cover nine months of living costs (i.e. £600
x 9= £5,400) plus tuition fees for your first year of study.
If you are living in Halls of Residence, the cost of heating
your room is usually included in your rent. If you are living
in private accommodation you will probably be responsible
for the cost of heating your room in addition to your rent.

Insurance
Your First Few Days In Bradford
It is in your own interest to arrange travel insurance before
you travel to the UK, in case of any problems during your
journey. If you are living in Halls of Residence, insurance
cover for your possessions is usually included in your
rent. However, you should check that the insurance policy
offered will insure all your belongings. If you are living in
private accommodation, it is essential to arrange insurance
cover for your possessions (known as ‘contents insurance’
or ‘student possessions cover’). We can suggest some
suitable insurance companies to you when you arrive.
Visit the International Student Information Point during the
International Student Enrolment and Welcome Week to pick
up this information and more.
Make sure you have contacted our Accommodation
Office in advance (see page 11), so that you know
what the arrangements are for getting access to your
accommodation. Then you won’t need to worry about
finding somewhere to sleep if you are arriving from a long
flight or late in the day. Once you’ve unpacked and met
your new flatmates, there are plenty of orientation activities
arranged to make you feel at home.

quickly get to know your surroundings. You will also be
invited to a reception at the very impressive City Hall, where
the Lord Mayor of Bradford formally welcomes you to the
City of Bradford.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Hello, my name is Sue Baker. I am the
International Student Adviser and I
work in the International Office. My role
is to help and support international
students with problems of any nature
that may arise during their study here.
I am also involved in organising the
Orientation and Welcome programme
for new students in September.
Here are some frequently asked questions from
international students about a wide range of issues. I hope
you will find the answers below useful. I look forward to
meeting you at the University in September.
Q: Will I be able to open a bank account in the UK and
can I do this before I arrive in the UK?
A: Yes, in most cases you can open an account in the UK
once you have registered here as a student. The bank will
need to see a letter to confirm you are a registered student
at the University (you will be able to get this from the
University after you have enrolled as a student), and your
passport. Some banks have offshore accounts that you
may be able to open from your home country, to deposit
your funds and withdraw from the UK.
See www.reviewcentre.com/products3375.html for
further details.
Q: Does it take long for the bank account to
be activated?
A: Depending on circumstances, it can sometimes take two
to four weeks for the account to become active, so make
sure that you have access to enough money for this period.
Don’t bring large amounts of cash with you though. Instead
travellers cheques are a good safe way to carry money
during this time, as is a bank card that you can use in an
ATM (cash machine) in the UK to withdraw small amounts
of cash.
44
Q: Is there an easy way to pay my fees from my
home country?
A: Yes, if you (or your parents or relatives) have a credit,
debit or Switch card, you can use our online payment
system, https://epay.bradford.ac.uk/epay/
This is a quick, simple and secure way to electronically
transfer money for your tuition and accommodation fees to
the University.
Q: I’m coming to the UK on my own and I’m worried
about making friends when I get there. Is it likely to be
difficult?
A: Don’t worry! All new students feel the same! A good way
of making new friends is to join in with the huge variety of
activities we have at the University. There are clubs and
societies, a sports centre, music centre, theatre and many
volunteering opportunities. You can also start to meet and
make contact with fellow students online before you arrive
in the UK, through our social networking site
http://developme.ning.com/
Q: What do I need to do when I first arrive?
A: This is a very frequently asked question! First of all settle
into your accommodation. Then, if you arrive at the start of
term in September, come and see us at the International
Student Information Point in the Richmond Building. We
will be delighted to meet you and help you with practical
information in your first few days. You will need to
complete your enrolment process when you arrive and
we will send you details of how to do this in advance, or
check with us at the Information Point when you arrive. If
you arrive at any other time of year, come to ‘The Hub’,
our Student Support Centre in the Richmond Building,
and we will be able to help you.
