Barcelona establishes the public/private
basis to roll out Smart Cities
Following on from conversations with
the company Cisco to develop the
Smart City concept, Barcelona has
established the public/private basis to
become a global reference model of
sustainable urban development.
The city will create the BIT-Habitat
Foundation, design the City Protocol,
test-run new urban services, and enjoy
the collaboration of private enterprises
that will also bring their knowledge of
human and material resources to the
table. This has all created a favorable
atmosphere for the creation of a Metropolis Initiative promoted by Barcelona City Council and Cisco.
The BIT-Habitat Foundation (Barcelona Institute of Technology for the Habitat) will encourage innovation in new
services and boost competitiveness
and the investigation of the economic
sectors considered strategic for the
city and its area of influence, with special attention on those related to smart
cities, sustainable growth, and urban
regeneration. The Foundation will foster the association or establishment of
agreements with public organizations
such as Metropolis and UN Habitat,
as well as private firms such as Cisco,
with whom it has already signed a participation agreement.
Both the BIT and the City Protocol will
be rolled out with the participation of
their private-enterprise partners for
the construction of seven pilot services in the field of public services and
the evolution of the city’s information
systems.
The City Protocol is based on a certification system that makes it possible
to measure and evaluate urban efficiency and quality with indicators that
cover structural, functional, social,
and sustainability-related aspects.
Metropolis and the Kreanta Foundation sign
agreement to work together on the Cátedra
Medellin-Barcelona initiative
The collaboration between Metropolis
and the Kreanta Foundation was formalized on Monday 12 March 2012
with the signing of an agreement to
implement the Metropolis Initiative
Transferring Knowledge and Cooperating in Culture, Education and City.
The signing of the agreement, by
Metropolis Secretary-General Alain
Le Saux and the Kreanta Foundation
president Félix Manito, represents the
implementation of the Metropolis Initiative “Cátedra Medellin-Barcelona”.
This Initiative begins from the solid
experience that the cities and civil societies of Medellín and Barcelona have
developed in the transfer, exchange
and generation of knowledge in the
fields of culture, education, and city,
and plans to extend this know-how to
other Metropolis member cities.
