By: Kristine Ellsworth 85th Annual NYWEA Conference On Tuesday February 5th, 14 students, 9 from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, 5 from Syracuse University and mentor, Doug Daley, attended the 85th Annual NYWEA Meeting at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square in New York City. The day began within the exhibitor’s hall, socializing and networking with various vendors in the wastewater and water related industries. Fred Agyeman: Effects of Particle Size of Food Waste on Biogas Production and Digestate Dewaterability in CoDigestion Dara Salley presents her research on Atrazine in Syracuse Drinking Water ESF NYWEA Chapter Members Throughout the day various topics were discussed in 30 minute open sessions that ran from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. These topics included Manufacturers forums, Green Infrastructure, Anaerobic Digesters, Prevention methods, CSOs and other Wet Weather Issues. An enjoyable lunch was provided for the students followed by the University Forum beginning at 1:20 p.m. Student presenters from both ESF and SU represented our NYWEA chapter in both the University Forum and Poster Session. Eric Dienst from Syracuse University presented on the Total Mercury Analysis in Brook Trout from Honnedaga Lake which concluded with positive correlations between the total mercury, fish length and age. Dara Salley, who ultimately co-won first prize, presented her research on the temporal variation in the concentration of Atrazine in the drinking water of Syracuse. Fred Agyemen (ESF), Corey Carpenter (SU), Maxim Huckstepp (SU), Leah Santiago (SU), Nicholas Glick (SU) and Gerardo Martinez (SU) presented their studies through a poster session in which conference attendees questioned and appreciated their research. The conference concluded with a post reception, 4 hour drive back to Syracuse and a 5 star meal at McDonalds.
