UnitAnnualReport LiteraturesandLanguagesLibrary IUnitNarrative TheLiteraturesandLanguagesLibrary’s(LLL)missionistoprovidelibrarymaterialsand servicestotheUIUCcampusforresearchandstudyoftheliteratureandlanguagesof WesternEurope,NorthandSouthAmerica,andFranco‐andLuso‐phoneAfricaaswellas cinemastudies,translationstudiesandlinguistics.Theunitservesastheprimarylibraryfor theSchoolofLiteratures,CulturesandLinguistics,theDepartmentofEnglish,andCinema Studies.Theunit’smajorfunctionsaretheselectionandorderingofprintandonline materials(books,journals,magazines,films,referenceworksanddatabases),reference, instruction,andoutreachtothecampusandlocalcommunity.Throughitsvariousactivities theLLLparticipatesintheLibrary’sstrategicmissiontotheUIUCcampus.Lastyearwasthe LiteraturesandLanguages’firstfullyearofoperation.Theexpertise,hardworkand dedicationofthestaffoftheLLLresultedinagreatmanyachievementsinFY12,themain onesbeingpresentedhere. Staffing TheLLLishometothreelibraryprofessionals:PaulaCarns,Head,LiteraturesandLanguages LibraryandLibrarianforLiteraturesandLanguagescoveringcontinentalEuropean(with theexceptionofFrench)andLatinAmericanliterature,linguisticsandtranslationstudies. SheisalsotheInterimLibrarianforLatinAmericaandtheCaribbeanandasaconsequenceis partoftheInternationalandAreaStudiesLibrary.HarriettGreenistheEnglishandDigital HumanitiesLibrarian,whoalsooffersofficehoursandworkscloselywiththeScholarly Commonsaspartofherservicesfordigitalhumanities.RobertCagleistheCinemaStudies andMediaServicesSpecialist.CarolineSzylowicz,Kolb‐ProustLibrarianCuratorofRare BooksandManuscripts,continuestobethelibrarianforFrenchstudiesthoughsheisno longerofficiallyapartoftheunit,nowbeingfull‐timeintheRareBookandManuscript Library.CarolinestillpurchasesmaterialsforFrenchlanguageandliterature,istheliaison withtheDepartmentofFrenchandprovidesthemwithinstructionandupper‐level reference;basicreference,however,ishandledintheLLL.TheprofileoftheLLL’s professionalstaffchangedlastyearwiththedepartureoftheLibrarianforGermanic LanguageandLiterature,LinguisticsandTranslationStudies.PaulaCarnsassumedthese dutiesinexchangeforLatinAmericanandCaribbeanStudiesexceptforliteraturesand languages,whichshewillcontinuetodo.However,untilthearrivalofthenewLACSlibrarian December2013,shewillcontinuetomanagethisarea.TheLLLhadtwocivilservicestaff: TonyHynes,SeniorLibrarySpecialist,andCarlGraves,LibraryAssistant,whojoinedtheLLL staffinJune2012toprovidecoverageatthecirculationdeskandhelpwithprocessing.InFY 12theLLLhadthreegraduateassistants(seemorebelow)andsixStudentAssistants. 1 InFY12LLLfacedtwochallengeswithregardstostaff.Thefirstchallengewasthe diminutionofprofessionalstaff.ThedepartureoftheLibrarianforGermanicLanguageand Literature,LinguisticsandTranslationStudiesreducedtheprofessionalstafffrom4.5to3.5 FTE.WhileProf.Carnstookoverthedutiesofthisposition,shestillcontinuedtobethe LibrarianforLatinAmericanandCaribbeanstudies(50%)andbeaffiliatedwiththe InternationalandAreaStudiesLibrary.Thesecondchallengewasthelossofacivilservice staffmember,TonyHynes,whotookapositioninanotherunitafterreceivinganupgradein lateMay2012.Asaresult,theLLLwaswithoutafull‐timestaffmember.CarlGraves,a LibraryAssistant,joinedthestaffinearlyJuneandwhileheprovidedhelpwithcirculation deskcoverageandfunctions,hisfrequentabsencesduetomedicalissues,meantthattheLLL oftenlackedastaffmember.Asaconsequenceofthisstaffingcrisis,theprofessionalstaff membersoftheLLLwereforcedtotakeoverthecivilservicestaffduties. CollectionDevelopment Humanitieslibrarianshipisstillprimarilyfocusedontheacquisitionofbooks,journals, magazines,films,andonlinetools.TheprofessionalstaffattheLLLspentmostofthelast yearbuildingthecollectionsintheirrespectiveareas.Informalconversationsandrecent library‐basedsurveyshaveshownthathumanitiesscholarstreasuretheUIUCLibrary primarilyforitsrichandvariedcollections.Thusbyconcentratingoncollection development,thelibrariansmettheneedsofthecampusandsupportedthemissionofthe Library.Theircollectiondevelopmentactivitiesnotonlyprovidedfacultyandstudentwith librarymaterialsforcurrentresearchandteachingbutalsoforfutureneeds.Acquisitionsof notewere: Avant‐gardeandexperimentalfilmworksfromtheearliestdaysofcinemauptoand includingthe1980s,thankstothereleaseofseveralveryimportantcollectionsof workonDVD.TheseworksincludeconsiderablecollectionsbyGartenbergMedia, IndexDVD,theFilmmuseumMünchen/GoetheInstituteCollection,andSecondRun Pictures. BibliothekdeutscherKlassikerDatabasecoverstheworksofmajorGermanauthorsspanning elevencenturiesandincludeshistorical,philosophical,theological,politicalandarthistory textspluscollectionsofessays,speechesandothernon‐literary.Thisresource,purchasein partwithcentralfundsmadeavailablethroughtheLibrary’sOfficeofCollections,isan importantsourceforGermanscholars. TellMeMoreLanguageLearningSoftware.Foranumberofyearsfacultyandstudentsat UIUChaverequestedanonlinelanguagelearningtool.FindingtheperfectonefortheLibrary hastakenaseveralyears.Lastyear,withthefinancialsupportofseveralunits,theLLLwas abletopurchaseTellMeMore.Withinweeksitwasagreatsuccessaroundcampusandisa verypopularsoftware. 2 CollectionManagement LastyearthelibrariansattheLLLacquiredagreatdealofprintmaterial,whichneededtobe processed,housedandmaintained.AsstatedintheNSMreportfortheLLL,thecollectionin theLLLservesasastartingpointforresearch.ThebulkofthecollectionisintheMainStacks withlesseruseditemsstoredattheOakStreetStorageFacility.Bytheendoftheyear,the shelvesintheLLLwerealmosttocapacity.Onechallenge,then,washowtobesttoweedthe collectionandwheretosendthematerialstransferredoutoftheLLL.Overthenextyearthe librarianswillconsidertheseissues.Theywillalsoconsiderhowbesttomaintaincontrolof thecollectionsintheMainStacks. LibraryInstruction LibraryinstructioniscentraltotheLLL’smissiontoaidtheeducationalroleoftheUIUC campus.Asthenumberandcomplexityoflibrarytoolshasincreased,theneedforlibrary instructionbysubjectspecialistshasbecomeessential.Withdeepknowledgeoftheir disciplinesandthepublicationtrendsforthem,subjectspecialistsofferthemost comprehensiveassistanceoutsideoftheteachingfaculty.Lastyear,thelibrariansattheLLL taughtalargenumberofinstructionalsessionstoagreatmanystudents.Inmanycases,the instructionwasforclassesthatpreviouslyhadnothadlibrarysessions,indicatingboththe needforinstructionaswellasthegoodworkbythelibrariansinpromotingtheirservices. RobertCagleprovidedbibliographicinstructionandone‐on‐oneconsultationforstudents enrolledinseveralclasses.Forinstance,hedidtwosessionsforProfessorMaraWade's courseonGermancinema.RobertalsoprovideinstructionalsectionsforProfessorJulie Turnock'scinemahistoryclassandanadvancedseminaronhistoriography.Healsoworked individuallywithanumberofgraduatestudentsdoingdissertationresearchonvariousfilm‐ andmedia‐relatedsubjectshelphisaudience,whetheritbeagrouporasingleindividual,to betterunderstand. PaulaCarnstaught17instructionalsessionsto410intheDepartmentofSpanish,Italianand Portuguese,DepartmentofGermanicLanguagesandLiteratures,andCenterforTranslation Studies.Fordetails,seeattachedspreadsheets.Inaddition,sheofferedlibraryinstructionto studentsandfacultyinone‐on‐oneconsultations. Outreach OutreachtotheUIUCcampusandbeyondisanimportantcomponentoftheLLL’sservice profile.TocelebratetheLLL’sgrandopening,thestaffhostedalibrary‐widepartyin NovemberintheReadingRoom.RobertCaglecontinuedtoworkwiththeNewYorkCity‐ basedBlackTheatreProject,dedicatedtocompilingandorganizingarchiveofmaterial relatedtothehistoryofblacktheatreinNYC,aprojectthathefirststartedsometimeago. Uponcompletionoftheproject,RobertwillgotoNewYorktoattendtheopeningofalarge historicalexhibit,completewithscreeningoflong‐lostdocumentariesaboutthistheatrical troupe.PaulaCarnshostedareceptionfortheCenterforTranslationStudies’fallprogram onnewtrendsintranslationattheLLL.HarriettGreenspokeatseveralEnglishdepartment eventsforstudentsandfaculty,includingtheNewGraduateStudentOrientationandthe EnglishStudentLeadershipCouncilcareernight.Shealsoco‐organizedthe2011Bloomsday celebrationwiththeRareBookandManuscriptLibrarystaff.Harriettalsoworkedwiththe ScholarlyCommonsstafftogiveapresentationondigitalhumanitiesservicesattheLibrary atthefall2011GSLISLEEPweekend.
