Case Study Pall Aria™ Water System Helps Bring Renewable Water Supply to Castle Rock, Colorado Overview The installation of a new water treatment system at the Plum Creek Water Purification facility in Castle Rock, Colo. is enabling the town to treat and deliver renewable surface water to residents and businesses. As part of the facility, which opened in June 2013, the Pall Aria™ system is a key component in a specially designed treatment process the Colorado town is using to treat renewable surface water from alluvial wells near East Plum Creek. The Challenge: Transition Non-renewable Water to Renewable Supply Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA ) sets legal limits on the levels of certain contaminants in drinking water. These limits reflect both the level which protects human health and the level which water systems can achieve, using the best available technology. The challenges the Town of Castle Rock faced were to transition from non-renewable water sources to a percentage of renewable water supply, move to minimal operator attention and maintenance for the system, and to also reduce chemical consumption. “Reducing or eliminating chemicals reduces the production of sludge and the need for its disposal” says Bill Peretti with Denver-based Water Control Corp., the local manufacturer’s rep for Pall Corp. “And of course, it reduces chemical cost and the need for onsite storage and handling.” Oxidized metals are removed in the pretreatment process, which includes a greensand filtration system. Any remaining iron and manganese is removed through Pall’s microfiltration membranes. However, a major objective of the new facility’s design is to maximize system efficiency by minimizing membrane fouling from precipitated metals. Dissolved metals, primarily iron and manganese, are naturally present in the tributary water Castle Rock is pumping to Plum Creek Water Purification Facility. Castle Rock, Colorado Plum Creek Water Facility The Solution Pall’s systems with Microza* membrane modules were selected by the Town of Castle Rock for its new Plum Creek Water Purification Facility. The polymeric microfiltration membranes provide protection against microbial contamination, while also removing organic and colloidal contaminants. The system yields other benefits to water providers and the overall treatment process, as well. Benefits Featuring a current treatment capacity of up to 4 million gallons per day (MGD), the Pall Aria™ system, along with other treatment facility components, is expandable to 12 MGD, which will help enable the town to meet future demand. “The Pall Aria water treatment system is part of a process which enables the town of Castle Rock, Colo. to transition from nonrenewable water sources to a renewable supply,” said Walt Schwarz, P.E., Town of Castle Rock Utilities project manager. “This plant represents an important step toward our goal of 75-percent renewable water. The Pall system gives us the flexibility to accommodate our growing community and accelerate our efforts as we pursue our long-term water goals.” Castle Rock's Pall Aria system produces and delivers renewable water in a small footprint. * Microza is a trademark of Asahi Kasei Corporation, Ltd.
