The investment covers two bio-fuel boilers, higher drying capacity and an upgrade of the saw line. As a result of the investments, annual output is projected to rise from 450,000 m3 till 525,000 m3 sawn pine wood products. Currently, Bollsta sawmill does not have sufficient bio-energy capacity but instead uses an oil-based boiler to produce the heat required for wood drying. With two new bio-fuel boilers fired by bark and other residual sawmill products, oil consumption at Bollsta sawmill will be reduced by 3,400 m3 annually. The sawmill’s emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels will be virtually eliminated “Sawn timber products and other products and fuels from the forest are significant in counteracting climate change,” says Katarina Levin, Manager of Bollsta sawmill. “It’s very satisfying being able to eliminate the use of fossil fuels at the sawmill and can dry the wood using only renewable bio-fuel. These boilers have the capacity for a further increase in the output of the sawmill.” The upgrade of the saw line and the higher drying capacity allows for the sawmill’s output to increase to more than 500,000 m3 sawn pine products. “Along with previous investments, we’ll have a highly competitive facility. We have the equipment to capitalise efficiently on the high quality wood raw material in the region. We, or our business partners, are also processing a considerable share of our products to an even higher value,” concludes Katarina. Bollsta sawmill currently employs some 140 employees and contractors.
