DRAFT DIRECTIONS FOR UNIX Users with LaTeX/TeX files Software Requirements: PDFLaTeX/ pdfTeX installed (e.g.., ftp://ftp.duke.edu/texarchive/systems/pdftex.tar.gz) LaTeX / TeX source file (although the converters can understand 2.09, use of LaTeX 2E is preferred) LaTeX / TeX style files, graphics files and any other referenced files; style files must be in same folder as pdf(la)tex application Procedures: 1. At the command line, type "pdflatex inputfile [outputfile.pdf]" 2. Application will verbosely echo detailed messages about the conversion; messages are also in *.log file after conversion ends. Comments: LaTeX 2.09 content is converted via an 2.09 emulator; LaTeX 2E produces better PDF files Converters accept graphics in the following formats: PNG, Tiff, Jpeg & Encapsulated PDF “pdfT E X is based on the original T E X sources and Web2c, and has been successfully compiled on Unix, Amiga, Win32 and MSDos systems. It is still under beta development and all features are liable to change. Despite its Beta-state, pdfT E X produces excellent pdf code.” (PDFTeX User’s Manual; 1999) Best results are obtained when conversion is done on the same machine as La/TeX file creation. This ensures that fonts specified in La/TeX files are embedded and subset properly.
