Dear Friends & Colleagues,
2015 is the 50th anniversary of the UCCS campus,
and this occasion has provided us with a wonderful
opportunity to celebrate our past, present and an
exciting future. Truly, the 2014-15 academic year was
one of many celebrations for the UCCS College

Last year, we started
several exciting
new programs and
welcomed some
dynamic new faculty
and staff members.
We reaffirmed our
continued pursuit of
excellence through
our reaccreditation by
AACSB International
and through our
faculty research and
publication at the
highest level. Most
importantly, we continued to see our students pursue
their dreams and launch their successful careers.
Our 50th anniversary is a time for celebrating, and
I hope you enjoy this look back on the college’s many
accomplishments and successes in 2014-15.
Sincerely,
Venkat Reddy, Ph.D.

BUILDING CAREERS FOR
21ST CENTURY SUCCESS
W
e are in the business of building successful futures. This is the measure by which
we succeed or fail. Every faculty member, every program and every resource at our
disposal is leveraged to create a market-relevant, innovative education with regional
and global networks that make us the nerve center for a world of opportunity.
In our 50th year, we have a lot to celebrate. Launching new programs, retaining our elite AACSB
accreditation and being named a “Best Business School” by U.S. and World Report all serve as
welcome validation. But this is just the beginning.
The world into which our graduates enter demands more relevance and rigor than ever before.
Which is why we will continue to leverage deep academic and business experience to bring
innovative programs and challenging coursework to life — in the classroom and in the business
arena, where our relationship-building yields electrifying hands-on opportunities that light the path
between theory and practice, between aspirations and true accomplishment in business and life.

Achieving IT Program Goals with Integrative
Conflict Management
Gary Klein, Team Lead, Business Analysis;
Couger Professor of Information Systems
Projects in a multi-project environment often conflict due to pursuit of their own
goals, their unique approaches to completion of required tasks, and their individual
need for limited resources. A process design for the resolution of such conflict
promotes agreement on means of implementation and a common commitment
to overall goals of the organization. Overall success rates are improved in an
information technology context when implementing the recommended conflict
resolution procedures.

The intellectual ecology of mainstream marketing
research: an inquiry into the place of marketing in the
family of business disciplines
Martin Key, Assistant Professor of Marketing
This paper attempts to address a growing concern that the field of marketing is
declining in influence. To accomplish this, the paper looks at 22 years of citation
data across nine of the leading scholalry journals in the areas of Marketing, Finance,
Management, and Accounting. The results indicate that within the four main
business functions, marketing articles are cited the least by other fields. Adding to
this dilemma, the methodologically sophisticated nature of marketing research may
prevent managers from seeking it out for insight and strategic influence.

Duty orientation: Theoretical development and
preliminary construct testing
Dustin Bluhm, Assistant Professor of Management
Scholars acknowledge that a greater understanding of duty in organizations is needed
to explain both performance and ethical behavior. This paper provides a starting point
for the study of duty in organizations by advancing the construct of duty orientation,
validating a measurement instrument, and providing empirical evidence of it as a
mediator between effective leadership and both ethical and performance outcomes. In
doing so, we seek to encourage inquiry into the etiology of duty and how it influences
thought and behavior in the workplace.

Introduction to Business
by Thomas N. Duening, Ph.D
Team Lead & Associate Professor, Management; Director,
Center for Entrepreneurship; El Pomar Chair of Business
and Entrepreneurship
Introduction to Business provides an overview of important concepts students
will need to understand business practices. Coverage includes guidelines for
entrepreneurship, international business, product development, and marketing.
Students will also learn the principles of business ethics, finance, and leadership.
The text provides business examples that encourage students to apply their
knowledge to real-world case studies.
To enhance, enrich, and enliven student learning, Introduction to Business includes
several features:
• Case studies feature business scenarios and relevant business events that
illustrate key concepts through real-world situations. Students are challenged
to analyze and solve problems by applying business concepts.
• Questions for discussion prompt students to critically examine the information
presented in the chapter and apply their knowledge.
• Exercises provide engaging activities for students to demonstrate their
knowledge in and out of the classroom.
• Pre-and Post-Tests prompt students to answer multiple-choice questions
that provide real-time feedback on their understanding of chapter concepts.
Dr. Thomas Duening is the El Pomar Chair of Business & Entrepreneurship and
Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship in the College of Business at UCCS. He
is a 1991 graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Ph.D. in higher education
administration and an M.A. in philosophy of science. He began his academic
career as the assistant dean for the University of Houston’s College of Business
Administration. There, he was also a visiting faculty member in the marketing
department and a cofounder of its Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.
