PATRICK WAYNE VALLEY FIELD
One of the nation's most modern track and field facilities is Patrick Wayne
Valley Field, which was dedicated March 30, 1974. The facility includes the
first international track (400 meters) to have been built in the United
States.
The track itself is a Chevron 440 surface, possibly the most resilient
surface ever produced.
The entire layout of Patrick Wayne Valley Field is one
of the nation's most imaginative and modern in terms of surface and provision
for electronic aids. The track was named in the memory of Patrick Wayne
Valley, a former student-athlete who died in 1969. His father, Wayne Valley,
was also an Oregon State graduate who made numerous contributions to the OSU
athletic program. Wayne Valley was a highly successful businessman in the San
Francisco Bay Area. At one time he was the principal owner of the Oakland
Raiders of the NFL. Patrick Wayne Valley was .a lineman on the OSU football
team from 1964 to 1966 and a member of the 1964 Rose Bowl squad. He died in a
drowning accident in 1969. Wayne Valley passed away in 1986.

THE COACHING STAFF
CHUCK MCNEIL
Head Coach
Now in his fifth year as Oregon State's track and field coach, Chuck McNeil
became the Beavers' head coach in August, 1983 on an interim basis for one year
and was then given the job the following year.
McNeil, 54, replaced Frank Morris as head coach in 1983 after Morris left
to take a position as assistant coach at Arizona State. McNeil served as an
assistant coach at Oregon State under Sam Bell and Berny Wagner from 1964 to
1976.
At OSU, McNeil is the head coach for the combined men's and women's
program.
The men's program has been 2-4, 2-5, 0-8 and 0-5 in dual meets under
McNeil's guidance, while the women have gone 0-4, 1-6, 3-5, and 0-5. The OSU
men have men ninth, seventh, 10th and ninth in the Pacific-lO Conference meet,
respectively, under McNeil. The OSU women have placed sixth three years in a
row in the finals of the NorPac Conference and 10th last year in the first
season of the Pacific-b Conference.
Under Bell and Wagner, McNeil helped develop several outstanding athletes,
including nine individual NCAA champions, while concentrating mainly on the
sprints, hurdles and javelin, but also aiding with the jumps and weightmen.
McNeil is a 1959 graduate of San Jose State University with a degree in
Physical Education. He received his master's degree from Oregon State in
Counseling and Guidance in 1964. He is a 1951 graduate of Turlock High School
in Turlock, Ca. McNeil spent three years in the Navy before entering Modesto
JC and later San Jose State.
Originally from California, McNeil competed as a sprinter in high school
and at San Jose State University where he was a member of the world's fastest
880 relay team his senior year. He also ran competitively for the Southern
California Striders and the Santa Clara Valley Youth Village track clubs.
His previous coaching experience includes stints on the high school and
junior college levels. He served as an assistant coach at Bakersfield College
(1960-61) and was head coach at South High in Bakersfield, Ca., from 1962-64.
He was a member of the OSU Physical Education staff from 1965, as well as his
1964-1976 stint as an assistant track coach, until taking over the track
program in 1983.
McNeil also boasts international coaching experience in sxi foreign

MIKE CHRISS
Assistant Coach
Mike Chriss, 31, joined the Oregon State staff in September 1982. Mike
works with the sprinters, hurdlers, heptathletes and decathletes.
Mike has had great success in developing athletes who are often overlooked
by others and who have not yet demonstrated their potential. Some of these
athletes typically walk on to the OStJ program and end up placing in the
conference championships and some even have qualified for the NCAA
championships.
The OStJ top 10 list has a number of athletes on it coached by Chriss.
Since his arrival at OSU, the women's hurdles top 10 list has been rewritten
several times.
Athletes coached by Chriss have received many of the track and field awards
presented at the conclusion of each season, including six most improved awards
and four most valuable awards.
Prior to joining the OSU program, Mike served as an assistant track coach
at Tigard High School and Sprague High School where he successfully coached
hurdlers tot he state championships.
He has also served as a clinician with
foreign Olympic committees in third world countries working in camps with young
athletes and clinics for national coaches.

emphasizing health education, exercise science and communications.
