The track was named in the memory of Patrick Wayne Valley, a former student-athlete who died in 1969. His father, Wayne Valley, was also an Oregon State graduate who made numerous contributions to the OSU athletic program. Wayne Valley was a highly successful businessman in the San Francisco Bay Area. At one time he was the principal owner of the Oakland Raiders of the NFL. Patrick Wayne Valley was .a lineman on the OSU football team from 1964 to 1966 and a member of the 1964 Rose Bowl squad. He died in a drowning accident in 1969. Wayne Valley passed away in 1986.
