Turning energy into progress
With traction transformers from Siemens
Answers for energy.
The right choice
worldwide
Traction transformers for every application
Siemens traction transformers are setting standards of quality
and versatility around the world. Over a century of experience
in development, construction and servicing has made Siemens
one of the world’s leading providers, and provides a solid foundation for customized, state-of-the-art railway transformers.
Our cutting-edge methods and optimally trained employees
at our four manufacturing locations guarantee out transformer
quality worldwide.
In a class of their own
Siemens develops and manufactures
traction transformers of all capacity
ranges for rail-based vehicles. The long
product life means that the focus is on
maximum reliability, economic efficiency
and safety – and ensuring that the transformers are perfectly in line with the
customer’s requirements.
2
This is reflected in different versions
based on the following parameters:
■■ Frequency, capacity and voltage
■■ Dimensions, weight and place
of installation
■■ Dissipation and short-circuit voltages
■■ Driving patterns and medium-frequency
performance, and
■■ Environmental requirements
(e.g. ester coolant).
Proven technology
Ultra-modern traction transformers from
Siemens are found in locomotives using
the Vectron platform as well as Amtrak.
For multi-unit trains used in long-distance
rail transport, traction transformers are
used in the Velaro in the UK, China, Russia
and Turkey, for instance, and in regional
transport they make up the most advanced
platform solution for railcars in the
Desiro class. Siemens manufactures the
traction transformers in its lead factory
in Nuremberg and in production lines
in Jinan, China; Mumbai, India; and
Voronezh, Russia. This also enables local
content requirements to be satisfied.
Siemens traction transformers are manufactured worldwide by skilled professionals
in accordance with the same high quality
standards.
Vehicle connection to suit customer requirements
Low-voltage versions for multi-system locomotives
Siemens has not only been awarded
Q-1 supplier status for DB AG, but also
holds the following certifications:
■■ DIN EN ISO 9001
■■ DIN EN ISO 14001
■■ OHSAS 18001
■■ EN 15085-2 CL 1
■■ GOST
■■ IRIS
Comprehensive range of services
From a technical perspective, Siemens
traction transformers cover every preference. In all capacity ranges up to 10 MVA,
and above, Siemens offers single-phase
transformers for machine rooms, underfloor and low-floor construction, and for
fitting in roof structures – thus allowing
plenty of freedom of design. The cooling
plant can also be supplied to suit customer
preferences, either integrated in the
full frame or as a separate component,
entirely in accordance with the engineers’
Low-noise pump with high power density
specific space requirements. Flexibility is
also the order of the day when it comes
to the selection of different cooling fluids.
This means there are solutions for all
capacity ranges that use oil or silicon, or
the ester-based fluid that is particularly
environmentally friendly.
An internationally reliable partner
New product developments come from
the lead factory in Nuremberg, where
close cooperation between Development
and Production at the pre-production stage
ensures that products are fully ready for
manufacture. Uniform, IRIS-compliant
quality standards are defined at the same
time, which are binding for manufacturing
at all production locations. A standardized, systematic structure for products,
uniform machinery fleets and matching
employee qualification standards at all
manufacturing locations enable short
delivery times and transport distances
worldwide.

Testing
traction transformers
Routine tests
Siemens traction transformers are tested essentially in the
same way as power transformers to ensure maximum safety
and reliability. Traction transformers often have a rated
frequency of 16 ⅔ Hz, in addition to the more standard
50 Hz and 60 Hz. They also normally have one or more
traction windings, windings for auxiliary voltages and
heating windings. Choke coils or resistances may also
be built into the tank.
Routine testing of traction transformers includes
the following:
■■ Measurement of winding resistances
■■ Measurement of ratios and proof of polarity
■■ Measurement of idling dissipation and idling current
■■ Measurement of relative short-circuit voltage,
short-circuit dissipation and total dissipation
■■ Testing with applied power-frequency withstand
voltage (testing of winding)
■■ Testing with induced power-frequency withstand
voltage (testing of winding)
■■ Testing of step switch/tap changer (if present)
■■ Inductance measurement on a case-by-case basis
Type evaluations
Depending on customer requirements, type evaluations
may examine different transformer properties. These are
normally measurements of heating and lightning impulse
voltage testing. For measurement of heating, losses are
fed in based on the preceding measurement and subsequent types of operation. Differing oil temperatures and
also the coolant temperatures (i.e. air/water) are recorded
in the process. The winding temperature is determined
indirectly based on winding resistance, which is measured
after the feed-in has been terminated. Pressure and throughflow measurements within the cooling circuit can also
be agreed upon. In the case of transformers that are fed
directly from the overhead lines, the high-voltage winding
is subjected to a lightning impulse voltage test.
Special tests
Special tests on the traction transformers include the
following:
■■ Measurement of magnetic field strength at different
distances from the tank wall in three orthogonal directions
■■ Noise measurements
■■ Partial discharge measurement
■■ Mathematical proof of sudden short-circuit resistance.
At the customer’s request, a test may also be performed
in an accredited third-party laboratory.
