Desiro HC – a good start for the new platform with the Rhine-Ruhr Express Siemens Traction Transformers, one of the world’s leading suppliers of traction transformers and throttles, received an order to manufacture and deliver traction transformers for 83 trains for Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) to launch the new Desiro HC platform. The new, exceptionally efficient regional trains are each equipped with two single-deck end cars and two double-deck middle cars and are used only for passenger service. The 105-meter trains can seat approximately 400 people. Siemens Traction Transformers has thus secured an opportunity to be represented with its transformers in future projects involving this platform for regional service. The first Desiro HC transformer is scheduled to ship in January 2017. The complete series will be manufactured in the Nuremberg factory and will ship by 2020. RRX, which is considered to be the metropolitan area’s project of the century, is expected to mitigate the growing traffic problems in the Rhine-Ruhr region starting in 2018. The region is one of Europe’s largest urban population centers, with around ten million inhabitants and numerous transit routes. Overloaded mass transit and train connections have significantly limited mobility for years, especially on the main route between Cologne and Dortmund. Like the train design as a whole, the transformer’s technical design is based on components that must meet the highest standards of energy efficiency. Two transformers with four traction windings each are installed on the roofs of the two end cars of each train. The train’s lightweight construction and, not least, the transformer’s aerodynamic design both help reduce the total energy consumption. Dr. Berthold Sedlmaier, CEO of Traction Transformers, comments on the contract award: “Our transformer was developed specifically to meet the requirements of the new generation of regional trains, the Desiro HC in this case. There is even room for improvement if necessary, for example where energy efficiency is concerned.” Siemens AG Energy Management Division Transformers Katzwanger Strasse 150 90461 Nuremberg, Germany Contact Christian Oberhuber christian.oberhuber@siemens.com Publisher and Copyright 2016: Siemens AG Energy Management Division Freyeslebenstrasse 1 91058 Erlangen, Germany siemens.com/transformers
