Siemens Transformers React rapidly to emergencies Mobile resiliency transformers Take security to the max In every official building you will find fire detectors – and fire extinguishers. For transformers, monitoring systems act as the fire detectors – but where’s the fire extinguisher in case of a real emergency? With mobile resiliency transformers, Siemens Transformers – renowned for cuttingedge innovations – has taken resiliency one step further. Tailor-made products for individual needs Nearly every power transformer is a tailor-made product – designed for a precise performance within a clearly defined setting of an electricity grid. Although mobile resiliency transformers combine three main features that define this product, each and every single solution is perfectly coordinated to fit best to the grid it is destined for. Our new product is designed and manufactured to enable our customers to react rapidly to any kind of outage. They combine three characteristics that are of uttermost importance when an emergency scenario needs to be faced: When developing this innovative product line, our transformer experts listened very closely to our customers and their needs. We have understood their biggest concerns to define the most important features of the product. But they also were focused on additional benefits that might be of value for certain customers. 1. Mobile They are very compact and lightweight and thus can be transported to wherever they are needed within a very short timeframe – sometimes even without the need for a transport approval. 2. Versatile Another aim was to save our customers money by not having to invest in many of these units. This is why our mobile resiliency transformers are versatile and each is designed to cover multiple ratings. 3. Rapid installation: To allow replacement as rapidly as possible, we employ several innovative solutions: oil-filled shipping, plug-in bushings, and plug & play cable connections are used. This ensures installation can be done by the utility-staff within 96 hours of original unit failure. Mobile Resiliency Transformers as timesavers a few seconds might lead to an emergency 1 day installation of mobile resiliency unit 3 days transport a mobile resiliency unit 1-12 months Typical timeframe for the use of a mobile resiliency unit to manufacture a power transformer 9-12 months Be prepared for the case of an emergency This is why there are a lot of additional features that can also be used in mobile resiliency units, to ensure the best solution is designed and manufactured to fit our customers’ needs. For example, it is possible to fill mobile resiliency units with ester instead of mineral oil – for higher environmental security and improved fire safety. Another possibility to further prevent a mobile resiliency unit from damage is to build it as a tank rupture optimized unit. As a transformer manufacturer that combines more than a hundred years of experience with being first in driving innovations, our customers rely on our expertise: We know the settings and conditions our transformers are located in and the performance they need to deliver to secure reliability and stability of the grid – no matter if this is in rural areas with long transmission lines and widespread population, or in crowded megacities. www.siemens.com/transformer-resiliency With mobile resiliency units bushing installation does not need to take as long as in this picture. Technical features 1. Keeping an extra-high-voltage transformer mobile Size and weight are key factors when is comes to transporting a power transformer. This is why our mobile resiliency units are built as 1-phase-units. Depending on the customer requirements, they can be lifted on a truck with either all or only part of the insulation fluid being kept inside the tank. There is also another advantage of an oilfilled installation: oil-handling when installing the units on site can be eliminated, which saves extra time. The dimensions and weight restrictions can be adapted to the local transportation standards and often can also be reducedto a level that special transportation approvals/permits are not necessary. 2. Installation as fast as it gets Installation of large power transformers is usually done by specialized installation teams and often takes 10 days or more to complete. However, in emergency situations it is crucial to get back to normal grid operation as fast as possible. This is why mobile resiliency units are equipped with plug-in silicone-shielded bushings. This means they can be connected without draining the main tank. The transformer can also be moved with the bushing installed. Plug-in connectors and cables ensure that the units can be connected to the grid within one day on site. 3. One fits (nearly) all: versatility For a perfect redundancy concept in terms of power transformers, one used to think that each and every unit would need a spare for emergency cases. As mobile resiliency units are versatile, they can be installed in several, predefined sites to restore the grid very easily and rapidly. When different ratings can be covered with just one mobile resiliency unit, this reduces investment cost and storage and logistical efforts. 4. Additional features Mobile resiliency untis being a tailormade product, there are several additional features that can be useful for this kind of product. They can be filled with ester as well as with mineral-oil or designed as tank-rupture optimized units. Depending on the installation site, connections with long cables are also possible, just as special tank designs with a stainless-steel baseplate to protect from rough undergrounds like broken rocks. Comprehensive portfolio Mobile resiliency transformers are the key innovation to pave the way to a resilient grid. However, Siemens Transformers offers a comprehensive portfolio of products and services for a substantial resiliency strategy. It consists of means to prevent existing assets from operational risks by sustainable transformer service, just as well as protect new equipment against vandalism and excessive heat. And even if all precautions might fail, mobile resiliency units give you an option to react rapidly to keep the energy world going in your area. How can we help you to ensure grid resilience? Our portfolio for grid resilience comprises service like condition monitoring and TLM, bullet resistant as well as GIC-safe solutions and mobile resiliency transformers – your assurance for the case of emergency. Contact us if one of the following thoughts crossed your mind lately: · · · · · · What happens if the next storm / hurricane strikes our substation? I do not want to be the target of some physical attack leading to an outage. I would like to buy spare units, but do not want to invest in several different transformers for that. I need a versatile power transformer. I need a solution that is easily transportable and quick to install. My company would like to have an ace up the sleeve for the case of emergency. Talk to us! We care about the resiliency of your grid as much as you do!
