AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN:
Illinois State Division. Records, 1924-1992.
1983-1994 Accessions (LOTS 1-7)
Lot 1, 1924-1983
The Illinois State Division of the American Association of
University Women began in 1833 with the formation of the Western
Association of Collegiate Alumnae. This Chicago organization was
modeled on the Boston-based Association of Collegiate Alumnae
founded two years before. These two groups, which merged in
1889, joined with the Southern Association of College Women to
form the American Association of University Women in 1921.
Today, there are more than seventy-five local branches in the
Illinois State Division. Records of the division include bylaws
both for the division and for individual branches; membership
directories; minutes of the state division; convention and
workshop reports; correspondence; committee reports; financial
statements; memoranda concerning AAUW-endorsed legislation and
issues; newspaper clippings; publications, including the
University Woman, a quarterly publication of the Illinois State
Division, scrapbooks; and tape recordings.
