RISE@WIU COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES RISE@WIU Diversity Awards M. & C. Wong Diversity Research Award Description & Criteria: This is a $350 award intended to increase participation of minority (African American and Hispanic) undergraduate students in research. The scholarship can be used to pay salary, supplies, or travel to a research site. Number of scholarships: Three RISE@WIU Diversity Awards are available. Priority will be given to one student from each department (Physics, Chemistry or Biology). If a department does not have suitable applicants, second and third best applications from any of the RISE@WIU departments will be considered. Scholarship applicant requirements: 1. Department of Biological Sciences, Physics or Chemistry major. 2. Sophomore, junior, or senior with at least a 2.8 GPA. 3. Enrollment in the RISE (Research Inspiring Student Excellence) program (contact Dr. Porras-Alfaro or your RISE department coordinator if you have questions about how to be part of RISE). 4. Career aspirations for graduate or professional school. Student must submit (see application form below): 1. Research proposal (maximum 500 words). The proposal must include: title, a brief introduction, research objectives, brief description of the methods, preliminary data (if available), and references (not included in the maximum number of words). Include a budget and budget justification. 2. Deliverable(s) of the project and expected date of deliverable(s): The award committee will carefully evaluate whether the deliverables and expected dates are feasible given the goals, current status of the project and proposed work. Examples of deliverables include: publication, presentation at national, regional or local meetings, research proposal, others. 3. Short statement of career goals and an explanation of how this award will be important to fulfilling those goals. 4. Curriculum vitae. 5. Letter of recommendation from research faculty mentor. 6. Official transcript. Terms: $350 to cover research expenses (supplies, salary, field work expenses, visit to research site(s), equipment, etc). Student must present a report at the RISE meeting in the form of a ppt presentation. Student must submit a picture (conducting research or presenting at the meeting) that will be used for the announcement of the award, news release, etc. Pictures should be sent to the RISE coordinator. RISE@WIU funding should be acknowledged on any poster, oral presentation, publication or other products that are a result of your funded research. Official RISE logo must be used in presentations and posters. Additional accomplishments as a result of this research must be communicated to the RISE program coordinator. Selection Process: Recipients will be ranked by the Department Awards Committees and final selections will be made by the RISE@WIU committee. Deadline for Application: March 25th at 12pm. Submit your application to your Department's secretary. Recipient will be selected in April.
