Department Decorating Competition
The Swarm Days Committee would like to thank all those who participated in the office decorating competition. The
student judges were very impressed with the creativity, school spirit and extra efforts that folks put into this year’s
decorations. From the interactive line‐dancing at the International and Global Relations office, to the students’ wanted
posters and covered wagon at Student Financial Services or the homemade treats at the Registrar’s Swarm Stables, our
school spirit and Yellow Jacket pride was a winner at every office. However, for this competition, this year’s winner is the
Registrar’s Office! Congratulations and thanks so much for the yummy cookies! Be sure to check out some of the photos on

Need a Ride!? BHSU Ride Share is simply a Facebook group that connects drivers and riders. Ride sharing is economical!
BHSU Ride Share is a car pool system that allows those with cars to take a rider or riders along and help pay for gas or
dinner, or as a music DJ, a second driver taking shifts, or even just to keep company on the trip! The page can easily be
found on Facebook by typing "BHSU Ride Share" the search bar or visit here. If you notice that someone wants to join the
group, add them! If you think that some of your friends might benefit from this group, then send them a group invite.

Dodgeball Tournament

The BHSU Men's Basketball team is hosting their 2nd Annual Dodgeball Tournament. This event is for all Students and
Faculty. This event is free of charge plus there will be free food and drinks. Champions will receive a free t‐shirt, gift

Women's Soccer Tryouts
Oct. 7 | 5‐7pm | Young Center Fieldhouse
BHSU women's soccer coach Robert Blake has announced the first team function for Yellow Jacket soccer team. On
Wednesday, October 7, Blake will be holding an open tryout for any women on the BH campus that are interested in
playing soccer. The tryout will run from 5‐7 p.m. in the Young Center Fieldhouse. Each participant needs to bring a current
physical, indoor shoes, soccer appropriate apparel including shin guards and a water bottle. Those interested in trying out
should contact Blake beforehand at Robert.Blake@bhsu.edu or by phone at 605‐642‐6973.

KUDOS/ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Kudos to Black Hills State University faculty and alumni on recent accomplishments
David Scarborough, professor of human resource management, passed the Society for Human Resource Management
Senior Certified Professional (SHRM‐SCPSM) exam. Scarborough now joins “an exclusive global community of leading HR
professionals who have demonstrated their commitment to the profession through certification.” Those who pass the
SHRM‐SCPSM exam have demonstrated that they “possess the ability to translate their technical knowledge into business
results.”
BHSU alum Adam DeHaan, Class of ’95, was named the Ducks Unlimited 2014‐15 Director of Development of the Year for
his outstanding efforts as senior director of development for Iowa and Minnesota. DeHaan works with individuals,
foundations and businesses in Iowa and Minnesota to provide major sponsor support opportunities for Ducks Unlimited. He
also manages the volunteer major gift committees in both states.
Dr. Nicholas Wallerstein, professor of English, has published a paper in the Selected Conference Proceedings of the 23rd
Annual Northern Plains Conference on Early British Literature, edited by Erin Lord Kunz. Wallerstein's article is titled "The
Scheming Pardoner: Style in Chaucer’s Pardoner’s Tale."
Kenzie Bailey, Class of ’14, displayed her artwork in the Emerging Artists Gallery at The Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City.
The exhibit, which will be displayed through October, includes artwork that encompasses abstracted views of the human
form.
Dr. Rob Girtz, assistant professor of economics, was recently informed that his paper, “The Effects of Personality Traits
on Wages: A Quantile Regression Approach,” has been accepted for publication in the Economics Bulletin. This journal is
one of a few in economics that specializes in short notes, comments, and preliminary results. The Kudos/Accomplishments section highlights successes of our faculty and staff.

New certificate programs at BHSU‐Rapid City target workforce needs
BHSU‐RC recently announced the addition of Advanced Project Management and Computer Networking certificate
programs. Both programs are designed with a flexible format for working professionals and those looking for new career
opportunities.
Spearfish volunteer and supporter named Swarm Days Parade Marshal
Black Hills State University recently selected Carol Lundberg to serve as the 2015 Swarm Days Parade Marshal, an honor
acknowledging Lundberg’s support of the university and the Spearfish community she now calls home. The annual BHSU
Swarm Days Parade begins at 10 a.m. Oct. 10 and will travel down Jackson Blvd. and Main Street in Spearfish.
BHSU professor speaks about the future of the Earth and us
A Black Hills State University instructor will address the topic of climate change in the next Geek Speak lecture, discussing
how the phenomenon relates to extinction, capitalism and human evolution.
Matthew Bauman, instructor of creative writing at BHSU, will give this week’s Geek Speak lecture “Now That It’s Too
Late?: Climate Change and the Anthropocene.” The lecture will discuss climate change and human impact on the
environment Thursday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. in room 110 of Jonas Hall on the BHSU campus. The lecture is free and open to the
public.

Black Hills State University is ready to kick off its fall musical season. A variety of concerts with various genres of music are
scheduled, and BHSU music directors say there is something for everyone.
This year’s BHSU community band has grown, according to Dr. David Berberick, assistant professor of music at BHSU. The
group, comprised of both BHSU students and community members will perform exciting and challenging pieces during their
fall concert, he said.
