How did language begin? How did our ancestors create their first words? The main difficulty with trying to answer that question is that there is very little evidence. If paleontologists have fossils, so they can reconstruct the shape of a human skull, oral language leaves no fossils (and writing is a relatively recent invention), so paleo linguists have nothing like that. It does not mean that we should not even try to find an answer (as was the trend in the 19th century), but it does mean that most of our evidence is circumstantial. This lecture will attempt to unravel some of the mysteries behind the origins of language. ‐‐Submitted by Courtney Huse‐Wika ‐ 10‐23 Procedure for submitting abstracts for NCUR Procedure for submitting abstracts for NCUR 2016 to be internally reviewed by University Research Council [URC] and beyond: Step #1: Kindly go to the link www.bhsu.edu/ncur to complete the application form and upload the .pdf file of the abstract.
