Foundations of Mathematics MFM2P1 Grade 10 Applied C o l l e g e H e i g h t s S e c o n d a r y S c h o o l Teacher: Ms. Bowman Course Description: This course enables students to consolidate their understanding of linear relations and extend their problem-solving and algebraic skills through investigation, the effective use of technology, and hands-on activities. Students will develop and graph equations in analytic geometry; solve and apply linear systems, using real-life examples; and explore and interpret graphs of quadratic relations. Students will investigate similar triangles, the trigonometry of right triangles, and the measurement of three-dimensional figures. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking. The Ontario Curriculum Ministry of Education and Training 2005 Prerequisite: Grade 9 Mathematics, Academic or Applied Strands: Trigonometry • Solving Problems Involving Similar Triangles • Solving Problems Involving the Trigonometry of Right Triangles Measurement • Solving Problems Involving Surface Area and Volume, Using Imperial and Metric Systems of Measurement Medelling Linear Relations • Manipulating and Solving Algebraic Equations • Graphing and Writing Equations of Lines • Solving and Interpreting Systems of Linear Equations Quadratic Relations of the Form y = ax2 + bx + c • Manipulating Quadratic Expressions • Identifying Characteristics of Quadratic Relations • Solving Problems by Interpreting Graphs of Quadratic Relations Materials Needed ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ scientific calculator pencils, eraser, ruler 3-Ringed Binder lined paper Attendance and Work Completion Please arrive to class on time each day. If you are late for class you will serve a detention during break. Frequent lates will result in a phone call home. Regular attendance is essential for success. A note is required from your parent or guardian on the first day back from an absence. If a note is not provided, this will result in a phone call home. Frequent absences will result in a referral to the office. Homework will be assigned, to be completed daily. Students are expected to arrive prepared for class each day, with necessary pens, pencils, notes and scientific calculator. If you are going to miss an assessment, please let me know in advance so that we can make alternate arrangements. PERMISSION TO LEAVE CLASS POLICY STATEMENT Students should not leave the classroom for the first/last 20 minutes of class. Students in the halls during class time must have a note from the teacher. If a student misuses their hall pass the student will lose their right to use a hall pass for a period of time. Students must show their hall pass to any of the school staff who ask for it. Detentions and suspensions will be issued to students who do not follow the rules. Course Evaluation The evaluation for this course is based on the student's achievement of curriculum expectations. A full credit is granted and recorded for this course if the student's grade is 50% or higher. a) Term work will make up 70% of a students final grade. The assessments will be divided into categories: Knowledge/Understanding Thinking/Inquiry/Problem Solving Communication Application 30% 20% 20% 30% b) Final Summative Assessment will make up 30% of a student’s final grade. Homework, participation, attitude and responsibility are major factors for success in mathematics classes. _____________________________________ Student Signature ___________________ Date _____________________________________ ___________________ Parent/Guardian Signature Date
