What will we talk about?
We’d love to talk
to your students.
Kindergarten: Pets Have Feelings Too! (Pet Care &
Safety) Look and listen, to identify how different pets
show feelings, then practice how to touch pets safely.
Why is
humane
education
impor tant?
Grade 1: Bite Free (Safety) Students model canine
body language and learn valuable rules about dog
safety and respect for animals.
Grade 2: Swamp Shrinkin’ Boogie (Wildlife & Environment)
We explore fairness as we act like wetland animals and
discuss the impact of human development on animal
habitat.
Grade 3: The Pet is Right! (Character Education) Problem
solve through an exciting game show to choose a pet
that’s right for you!
Grade 4: Wildlife Rescue (Wildlife & Safety) Role play
as a wildlife rehabilitator and use plaster animal skulls to
examine how we can cooperate and coexist with wildlife.
Grade 5: Animal Investigations (Government & Animal
Issues) Students assume the role of animal control
officers, applying their understanding of compassion
and respect for animals to enforce different cases with
Canadian animal protection laws.
Grade 6: Circus Fun? (Perspectives & Animal Issues)
Investigate the debate over the fairness of using
animals in the circus by role playing a town council
meeting.
Grade 7: More In-fur-mation Please (Natural Resources &
Animal Issues) Use critical thinking as we conduct a
town vote after discussing the benefits/consequences
of using fur as a natural resource.
If we’ve intrigued you, and we hope we have, we’d
love to hear from you – we’d be delighted to schedule
a presentation at your school.
The program is available free of charge to your
school. We simply ask that you send a letter home
requesting students to bring in donations if they
wish. Every year, Humane Values is made possible
through our school donation program, as well as
our annual Guthrie Memorial Golf Tournament at
Victoria Park East Golf Club.

Because it helps us all live more thoughtful, more responsible lives.
Humane Education doesn’t simply teach us how to
treat animals with respect and grace, it teaches us
how to treat each other with respect and grace.
The Guelph Humane Society’s Humane Values
Program has its foundations in character education.
We ask children to identify intellectually with the
thoughts, feelings and attitudes of animals, and in
particular with the dog we bring to their classrooms.
With the Humane Values program, we strive to
create a foundation with which children can build
the skill of empathy, so that they may create better
relationships with animals and indeed other people.
Our hope is that the talks we have with children
about living in a humane way spur conversations
with those they meet throughout the course of
their life, that they become humane citizens, and
in their own way, humane educators, too.
Who does the DSC help?
We seek to create a community that is more
patient, understanding, responsible and kind
toward all creatures – animal and human – who live
within it.
The Humane Values Program is structured to meet
Ontario curriculum teaching guidelines for each of
the grades from Kindergarten to Grade 7. Lessons
address expectations in science, social studies,
language, drama and health. Our interdisciplinary
approach to topics offers children a chance to interact
with animals while playing various roles, such as
animal rehabilitators or members of a town council.
In each topic we cover, we emphasize the ways that
children can apply the traits of compassion, fairness,
responsibility and respect in their interactions with
all living things.
