Adjusting his mask, seventh-grader Andrew Kearny floats 60 feet
under water off the coast of Jupiter. “I dived 60 feet under water.
I saw a bunch of parrot fish, a couple angel fish, kingfish and even
barracudas,” Kearny said. “All the hard work really paid off.”
“It’s just a nice time to play sports. I
just like being outside, doing crew,
running around and going on bike
rides. It’s nice because for once you
don’t sweat.” — Moriah Padgett, 8
“My brother and I carved pumpkins over the weekend. He didn’t
know how to draw a face, so he just attacked the pumpkin with a
Sharpie. It ended up looking like a cartoon dog with eyes way bigger
than the mouth.” — Jason Nemeroff, 9

The Scottish Independence Referendum is held and
citizens vote on whether Scotland would be an
independent country. “No” won out with 55.3 percent
and Scotland remained part of the United Kingdom.
“My favorite thing about fall is definitely the weather. It makes camping a lot more enjoyable. The last trip we went
on, we built bamboo rafts and rafted out to the island and stayed overnight in primitive gear. That meant pretty
much a tarp and a sleeping bag and your own food. My favorite part was probably rafting across the quarter-mile
of river. We didn’t use paddles. We just took bamboo sticks and dug them into to bottom of the river to push
ourselves across.” — Avi Patel, 11
“I really like fall, especially when
pumpkin spice lattes come
back.” — Jonah Hinebaugh, 11
“Walking from class to class is confusing. There are a lot more
people. The seniors are really tall. I thought I was going to
die [the first day] because I was going to get squished. I was
scared they were going to kill me.” — Courtney Carter, 7

“I don’t really celebrate
Halloween, but I take candy from people.”
— Lorre-Kaye Leslie, 11
“I loved Powderpuff. The senior
chants were amazing. I guess the
juniors were OK too.”

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declares its first case of Ebola virus
disease in the U.S. The patient was a man who became infected in Liberia and traveled to Texas, where
he was hospitalized. He died on Oct 8. “If Ebola comes to Melbourne, I’m going to build my own
canoe and escape to Australia or Hawaii,” junior Brandon Duchaine said.
“When there are cool days, I like
to be able to wear jackets and
sweaters and jeans and boots —
not sandals like we always do.”
— Jeannine Widere, 11
“Dynamic Duo day was probably my
favorite for the fact that it was really cool
to think of a unique idea. One of my
favorites was the firefighter and the dog,
because I thought that was so creative.
I was Kanye West and my other half was
also Kanye West because who is better
than Yeezus himself?” — Alicia Ortiz, 12
“It was really funny to see everybody’s reactions to ‘Anaconda’ [by Nicki Minaj].
Everyone went crazy. They were singing every word. I’m pretty sure half of them
only came [to the dance] to hear that song.” — Savannah Henderson, 7

Fashioning a pumpkin with glasses, eighth-graders Sage
Borsanyi, Alexandra and Phoebe Theophelis visit their
local pumpkin patch in Indialantic. “Just being there with
my friends and gets me into the fall spirit,” Borsanyi said.
“I like watching college football, like West
Virginia, in the fall. We sit around on the
couch, eat popcorn and cheer when they
win. My dad once jumped up screaming
and ran around the house after they scored
a winning touchdown.” — Joel Boysen, 11
“We live on a street where everyone has their house decorated
and people will scare you. One year there was a chainsaw man with
chains. He kept following us for two streets, and it was really scary.”
— Missy Ferguson, 11
“Fall food is the best, pumpkin and cinnamon, things of that nature. Pumpkin pie is
definitely the best. I made a homemade crust and I made a really cool design on the edge. A
lot of my family would joke about how I’m bad at baking, but I’m actually really good at
baking. Still, every time I make pumpkin pie they ask, ‘did you poison my slice?’”
