News from President Tom Jackson, Jr. July 22, 2015 Student’s Original Composition Earns Standing Ovation BHSU music education major Jesse Dunaway conducted his original composition “Homestake Mine” at the Historic Homestake Opera House as a kickoff to Neutrino Day at Sanford Underground Research Facility. Dunaway wrote the musical piece bringing to life the rich history of the Homestake Mine. Jim Dunn, a long-time employee at Homestake Mine, as quoted in Deep Thoughts news, said “This young student captured the heart and spirit of the mine’s past and what the future holds.” The piece received a standing ovation from a nearly full house. College graduates are charged with making an impact and furthering their field. The next source of energy and the cure to disease will likely be discovered by a college graduate. BHSU Proposes Strategic Education and Economic Initiatives Officials from BHSU discussed strategic initiatives at the most recent Board of Regents (BOR) meeting. BHSU presented five major initiatives that would greatly increase educational opportunities, stimulate economic activity, and meet statewide teacher preparation challenges. BHSU President Tom Jackson, Jr. noted that each request draws upon the unique strengths of the university, are closely tied to the BOR’s strategic priorities, and meet some of the most challenging needs of the state. The five BHSU-proposed initiatives are: • BHSU Underground Campus Infrastructure; • Center for American Indian Studies; • Center for Civic Engagement & Economic Innovation; • Institute for Teacher Preparation & Retention; • Weekend and Senior Citizen College. New Programs at BHSU-RC New academic programs were announced at the Black Hills State University-Rapid City location Open House recently. BHSURC added nine additional bachelor degree programs available entirely in Rapid City. There are also new associate degree options, certificate and non-credit industry programs. For the first time, BHSU-RC will offer certificates in IT and Project Management. Read more about these initiatives. 2015 BHSU Jacket Ride set for Tuesday of Rally Week The third annual BHSU Jacket Ride is set for Tuesday, Aug. 4, during the 75th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The annual community event is a fundraiser for student veteran scholarships. Beginning at Lyle Hare Stadium, the two-hour, 88-mile scenic ride through the Black Hills ends at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip campground with lunch, live music and other special events. [ Where ANYTHING is possible ] Yellow Jackets Compete at July 22, 2015 National Rodeo Finals The BHSU rodeo team closed out its 2014-15 campaign at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., with several individual highs including Katie Lensegrav from Interior leading the way for the Yellow Jackets with a 15th place finish in goat tying and an 18th place finish in barrel racing. Head coach Glen Lammers commented on the season as a whole as both the men’s and women’s teams qualified together for the first time in school history. “We met several of our goals during the season. The finals are something that we want to come back to and be more successful next year at that event,” said Lammers. The group visited companies including Audi, Triumph International and Carl Zeiss Vision Production. Faculty from Aalen University spoke on a variety of topics including economic history and human resources management in Germany. Wells Fargo Donates for Scholarships G 1883 Erin Kinsey from Sheridan, Wyo. spent a semester studying at Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland, through CEA Global Education, a study abroad program affiliated with BHSU. While overseas, Erin worked as a mobile journalist, promoting her study abroad experience to future students in the CEA program. Erin shared her experiences from culture to the classroom through photos, videos and social media platforms. Building for the Future 2015 You’re invited to the 1883 Gala at BHSU Saturday, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. on the Joy Center patio. The Gala provides BHSU an opportunity to showcase the university, raise scholarship dollars and recognize our avid supporters.
