News from President Tom Jackson, Jr. September 16, 2015 Governor visits BHSU during Black Hills State University welcomed South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard to campus last week as part of the state’s Capital for a Day in Spearfish. Spearfish Capital for a Day Daugaard visited the Sanford Science Education Center at BHSU, a partnership linking educators, scientists, and students of BHSU and Sanford Underground Research Facility. Faculty and students from the BHSU exercise science program, one of the fastest growing programs at the university, also shared with Daugaard how they are responding to the growing demand for wellness professionals. It’s been a wonderful start to the fall semester at BHSU! Our students are engaged in their courses and it’s great to see our faculty inspiring them to achieve their goals. School spirit is thriving! Daugaard visited with University, business and community leaders at the Joy (Proctor) Krautschun Alumni/Foundation Welcome Center before continuing his day in Spearfish with a Main Street Walk and Community Coffee. The Governor hosts Capital for a Day four times each year, meeting community members and hosting a roundtable in select cities throughout the state. BHSU Professor Named 2014 Difference Maker Dr. James Hess, professor of psychology and chair of behavioral sciences at BHSU, was awarded the 2014 Difference Maker at the 1883 Gala last month. The 1883 Gala honored Hess, along with other BHSU contributors that donated more than $1,883 in a calendar year or more than $50,000 in a lifetime. President Sets Optimistic Outlook with State of the University Address BHSU President Tom Jackson, Jr., welcomed new and returning faculty and staff and challenged them to keep finding ways to inspire students during his annual State of the University Address last month. Jackson shared University accomplishments from the past year, trends in higher education, and key plans for the future during the address. View highlights of the address and the slide presentation. The Difference Maker Award is presented to the University’s top donor for the previous calendar year. Hess pledged a $1 million gift to [Where ANYTHING is possible] the University to establish the Make a Difference Initiative, a scholarship challenging students to develop a sustainable community project that will make a difference in the lives of others. Four Generations of BHSU Presidents Greet Retirees BHSU President Tom Jackson, Jr., and former presidents Kay Schallenkamp, Tom Flickema, and Clifford Trump attended the Annual BHSU Retired Faculty & Staff Picnic hosted by the Alumni Association earlier this month. The current and former presidents represent 30 years of BHSU leadership. September 16, 2015 Student Veteran Donates Flag to BHSU-RC An American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol honoring veterans in the state of South Dakota will find a new home at Black Hills State University-Rapid City, thanks to the Student Veteran’s Club at BHSU-RC. Joshua Kosola, business administration - human resources management major originally from Newell and co-founder of the Vet’s Club at BHSU-RC, said the Vet’s Club worked with Sen. John Thune several years ago to fly the flag over the U.S. Capitol honoring South Dakota veterans. Kosola and the Vet’s Club donated the flag to BHSU to serve as a memorial at BHSU-RC thanking current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces who visit the building. The BHSU campus community held the inaugural Gage McSpadden “Sheriff” Memorial 5K Race/3K Walk last weekend at the Spearfish City Park. McSpadden was a member of the BHSU cross country and track & field teams. He sustained serious injuries and later passed away after being struck by lightning in July. Inaugural 5K Race/3K Memorial Walk/Run Honors BHSU Student Gage McSpadden A memorial endowment was established in McSpadden’s honor with proceeds from the “Sheriff” Memorial 5K/3K benefiting it every year. Each participant of the inaugural run received a “Live, Laugh, Dance, Run” wristband honoring McSpadden’s memory. The recognition affirms that BHSU students are receiving a state-of-the-art, cutting edge education. BHSU Increases Study Abroad Opportunities New international relationships and collaborations over the past year are providing increased study abroad options for BHSU students. Dr. Katherine Wildman, the newly-appointed director of international relations and global engagement at BHSU, says the University is connected with more than 30 countries where students can travel, learn, and complete their BHSU degree. Swarm Days Studies consistently show that students who study abroad achieve higher retention and graduation rates, secure employment sooner after graduation, and earn higher salaries.
