Subject Headings
*Subject headings are key words assigned by the Library of Congress to group books on similar topics together and often
include words that try to describe many different subgroups or variations of a large topic. The Library of Congress does
not include every word including some of the words the LGBTQIA community uses to identify themselves. Librarians
know that you may identify as queer, trans, a dyke, pansexual, and other terms that might not be subject headings.
Below are subject headings that can help you find books that you desire through wording that you may not specifically
identify with, but may be a broader term that may include how you identify. Librarians are often allies. Ask a librarian if
you need any assistance in finding what you are looking for. One of the many allies in our campus libraries is Cindy
Ingold, Gender & Multicultural Services Librarian. You can reach Cindy at cingold@illinois.edu.
