The Bachelor of Innovation™ (BI) family of degrees is an internationally unique, interdisciplinary, undergraduate program at UCCS. The BI is a family structure, much like a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA), in which particular majors are defined. Beyond the technical depth of their major, which is the same as a BS or BA student, BI students emerge with a unique set of skills. These skills are developed through the Innovation Core of courses, 9 classes that provide a multi-year, multi-discipline team experience working on real problems with companies or non-for-profit organizations; an understanding of and experience in the innovation process of transforming ideas into sustainable societal impact; an understanding of the basics of entrepreneurship and business, policy and intellectual property. Coupled with experience in writing proposals and working with clients, BI students have a competitive edge. The BI encompasses the best of the arts, education, humanities, natural and social sciences, engineering, computer science and business blending the creative, philosophical, historical and pragmatic to enable students take their ideas out into the world as global citizens who are scholars, creators, critical thinkers, creative problem solvers and social activists. Successful innovators have the ability to understand and combine ideas from different fields into something unique and new. BI students hone this skill by taking five of their classes in a completely different field than their major by choosing a Cross-discipline Core. There are four Cross-discipline Cores: engineering, business, creative communication, and globalization. BI students can choose any one of them as long as it is a significantly different field than their major.
