Attachment 1 (Example)
One opportunity for extra credit is a type-written review of an instructor-approved book (15 points) associated with a discipline in Human Services. The guidelines used by Education Review , an electronic journal of book and essay reviews, must be followed in the development of the paper.
Reviews of scholarly books should be between 1,000 and 5,000 words. Every review article should begin by citing the book or books to be reviewed, with full bibliographic information including authors
(please include first names), copyright date, full title including any subtitle, place of publication, publisher, number of pages, ISBN Number. Pricing information is not needed. For example,
Hunt, Morton. (1997). How Science Takes Stock: The Story of Meta-Analysis . New York,
New York: Russell Sage Foundation. Pp. xii + 210. ISBN 0-87154-389-3
References and all other citations of published work in the review itself should follow the form specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. For example,
... as argued by Hedges (1987) in his investigation into the reliability of observations in the physical sciences."
And then in the References at the end of the review, the citation of Hedges (1987) would appear as follows:
Hedges, L.V. (1987). How hard is hard science, how soft is soft science? The empirical cumulativeness of research. American Psychologist, 42 (5), 443-455.
Submitted manuscripts should be accompanied by a paragraph describing the review author’s academic status, major, and career goals. If selected by the instructor, the paper may then be submitted to the departmental on-line journal for review by the editorial board for publication. See examples of book reviews at http://edrev.info/.
A second opportunity for extra credit is participation in research (5 points) examining academic major choice and career decision-making. Students interested in this opportunity must contact Dr. Judy Lauter
( jlauter@sfasu.edu
), the Director of the Neuroscience Laboratory, where the completion of the research packet, including the consent for participation in research form, and the EEG will occur. The
Neuroscience Laboratory is located in HSTC 103 (Human Services Building).
After an appointment has been scheduled with Dr. Lauter, upon a student’s arrival, Dr. Lauter and/or an administrative assistant will record the student’s name, the course of current enrollment, and the instructor’s name so that s/he might be notified by e-mail regarding each student’s participation.
Instructors will ONLY be notified that the student participated and the points to be assigned, but no additional information will be provided. Students must complete all parts of the research to receive total points. Students would also use this time to inquire about additional opportunities for participation in research for extra credit. There are no guarantees, but such may periodically occur. ”
