Easte y p p a Ha Have Exercise Humor for adults over 50 Recently I came across this exercise suggested for older adults to build muscle strength in the arms and shoulders. It's so easy, I thought I'd pass it on. The article suggested doing it three days a week. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day, you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks. Then try 50lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.) After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks. It’s about demonstrating to the nation that by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week, has grown exponentially each year, with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week. We encourage RSVP agencies to recognize volunteers during this time, as RSVP will, as well. THANK YOU to all of the volunteers for making our communities a better place! Be watching for more information during that week in our local newspapers and in your mail box! More Training! We received the new grant! Now what? Please join us as we get back to basics and talk about the foundations of RSVP. We’ll discuss how our upcoming grant requirements will change and how that will affect you. Discussion Topics will include; What you should volunteer hours? report for How this will change RSVP? How can your current volunteer activity apply to the new RSVP guidelines? There is no cost for these training sessions and it is open to all current and potential RSVP volunteers AND agencies working with RSVP volunteers. Refreshments will be provided. This training is sponsored in part by the John T. Vucurevich Foundation and Black Hills Corporation. Together, we can meet this new challenge! Please call the RSVP office for the date and location that will work best for you. 605-642-5198 or email rsvp@bhsu.edu for details. NEW GRANT INFORMATION You’ve heard about it for a long time. The new grant will bring some changes to RSVP. But, what are they? I will try to explain. Here are the requirements, as explained by CNCS, the federal agency that provides the grant. A) Requirement 1: A minimum of 10 percent of the unduplicated RSVP volunteers must be in work plans that result in outcomes. As you formulate the community needs that your volunteers will meet, and develop appropriate service activities to meet those needs, please ensure that this 10 percent total is included. The 10 percent of volunteers can be consolidated in one work plan, or can be reflected in as many work plans as you need to accurately describe their placements and outcomes. The 10 percent is the minimum threshold. You may increase the required percentage. B) Requirement 2: At least 25 percent of the unduplicated RSVP volunteers must be placed in assignments that address one of the CNCS Focus Areas, which would be the Primary Focus Area for this grant application. You may exceed the required percentage. The Focus Areas are: • Education • Healthy Futures • Veterans and Military Families • Environmental Stewardship • Economic Opportunity • Disaster Services C) Requirement 3: No more than 30 percent of the unduplicated RSVP volunteers can be placed in the community priorities work plan. D) Requirement 4: The remainder of the unduplicated RSVP volunteers are placed in volunteer activities aligned with either: • CNCS Agency-Wide outputs and/or Complementary Program Outputs; OR • CNCS Agency-Wide outputs and/or Complementary Program Capacity Building outputs. After planning for 25 percent of the unduplicated RSVP volunteers to be placed in CNCS primary focus areas (requirement B) and for a maximum of 30 percent of unduplicated RSVP volunteers to be placed in local community priorities (requirement C), the remainder must be placed in activities aligned with the CNCS Agency-Wide OR Complementary Program outputs. NEW GRANT INFORMATION...cont’d To further explain, here is a graph that shows the guidelines. That makes sense, right? No? OK, here’s what this means TO YOU… RSVP volunteer hours will need to fit into certain categories in order for them to be counted. It will be determined which volunteer jobs fall under what categories by the BHSU RSVP office. For now, PLEASE continue to submit your hours AS YOU ALWAYS HAVE. Hours will be recorded under the appropriate category in the Volunteer Reporter database here in this office. Please continue to volunteer at the same agencies, continue turn in your volunteer time as before, and don’t worry about categories. However, please know that some volunteer hours may not qualify any longer as it might not fit into an appropriate category. As these new regulations will begin July 1, 2015, I will be learning with you. I will do everything I can to legitimately count as many hours as you submit. If you have questions about the volunteer service you provide and whether it will count for hours, you are always welcome to call, or email, to discuss. There will be changes and adjustments along the way but BHSU RSVP will continue to support the quality volunteering that you all do. -- BHSU MEDIA BLITZ -APRIL 21, Tuesday ANY RSVP volunteer is welcome to participate in this media project.
