ASCO’s ASM technology is set apart from traditional status indication by allowing facility managers to proactively replace an SPD prior to end-of-life, upgrade to larger capacity units or proactively replace installed SPDs prior to heavy lightning activity. The ASCO Active Surge Monitor also indicates when an active event is happening, assuring the SPD is still functioning and operational. 1 Line and Neutral LEDs 1 3 2 L1 L2 L3 N Green = Normal Operation Orange = Reduced Protection Red (steady) = Protection Failure Red (flashing) = Active Event SERVICE N MOV Health L1-N MOV’s PASS L2-N MOV’s PASS L3-N MOV’s PASS N-G MOV’s PASS Next Page Prev Page 2 Service LED 3 Web Interface Green = Normal Operation Red = Protection Failure Orange = Active Event Pass = SPD components are functional and system is fully protected. BACK UP DOWN ENTER Fail = significant component failure exists in at least one mode and the SPD is in need of repair or replacement. PUSH TOGETHER TO SILENCE ALARM Sampling Rate Sampling rate is defined as the number of times an analog signal is measured or sampled in one second. Power monitors sample the electrical sine wave to detect variations in the voltage or current that may indicate the presence of power quality events or conditions. How Fast Should the Sampling Rate Be? With one electrical cycle equaling 1/60 of a second (.016s) and damaging events like transients being a few millionths of a second, you can understand why faster sampling rates are desired. ASCO’s Active Surge Monitor (ASM) samples every four microseconds, which equates to 4,166 times every cycle or 250,000 times every second. This rate allows the monitor to capture ALL anomalies from voltage harmonics to fast transients. The ASCO Active Surge Monitoring Devices Sample at: • 4,166X/cycle • 250,000X/second (Waveform Cycle = 1/60 of a Second) The speed or rate at which a power quality device samples is extremely important, if the sampling rate is too slow, power quality events may go undetected.
