Active Surge Monitor
Surge Protection that Monitors, Measures and Manages
A Web-Based Power Quality Monitor Integrated within the
ASCO Series 500 and 400 Surge Protective Devices
•Measurement and Recording – Monitor voltage at every connected panel and record system anomalies such as transients, surges, swells and VTHDs
•Event Date and Time Stamp – Log and record the exact moment of each event for a better understanding of site history, power quality trends and diagnosis of preemptive diagnostics
•SPD Health Monitoring – Track the condition
of the SPD and gain a more complete
understanding of the impact of each power
quality event prior to ‘end of life’

SPD Health
LEDS, alarms, relay contacts and surge counters offer little insight into the overall health or life expectancy of your
SPD. ASCO’s ASM technology is set apart from traditional status indication by allowing facility managers to proactively
replace an SPD prior to end-of-life, upgrade to larger capacity units or proactively replace installed SPDs prior to heavy
lightning activity. The ASCO Active Surge Monitor also indicates when an active event is happening, assuring the SPD is still
functioning and operational.

Sampling Rate
Sampling rate is defined as the number of times an analog signal is measured or sampled
in one second. Power monitors sample the electrical sine wave to detect variations in the
voltage or current that may indicate the presence of power quality events or conditions.
How Fast Should the Sampling Rate Be?
With one electrical cycle equaling 1/60 of a second (.016s) and damaging events
like transients being a few millionths of a second, you can understand why faster
sampling rates are desired.
ASCO’s Active Surge Monitor (ASM)
samples every four microseconds,
which equates to 4,166 times every
cycle or 250,000 times every
second. This rate allows the
monitor to capture ALL anomalies
from voltage harmonics to fast
transients.
The ASCO Active Surge
Monitoring Devices
Sample at:
• 4,166X/cycle
• 250,000X/second
(Waveform Cycle = 1/60 of a Second)
The speed or rate at which a power quality device
samples is extremely important, if the sampling rate is
too slow, power quality events may go undetected.
