Emphasis on the key principles of first aid. Student CPR and safety and first aid certification cards issued at completion of course upon passing certification tests. 10. Prerequisites: none 11. Attendance Requirements: A. Students should make every effort to attend all class meetings. All absences must be explained to the satisfaction of the instructor who will decide whether the omitted work may be made up. Any student who misses twenty–five (25%) or more of the regularly scheduled class meetings will receive a grade of F for that course. a. Tardies: Roll will be taken at the beginning of class. If you walk in late and attendance has already been taken, you must make a point to see the professor after class so that you are marked off as being at class, however, you will be counted as tardy. Failure to see the instructor after class if you missed roll call will result in being marked as absent that day. NOTE: *2 tardies = 1 absence!* B. Work due when a student is scheduled to be absent for any reason should be turned-in before the class meets. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR PLANNED ABSENCES, INCLUDING ATHLETIC EVENTS. If you are ill or have an unplanned absence, all work must be turned-in BEFORE the next class meeting. 15. Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty: ACADEMIC HONESTY: Wayland students are expected to conduct themselves according to the highest standards of academic honesty. Academic misconduct for which a student is subject to penalty includes all forms of cheating, such as possession of examinations or examination materials, forgery, or plagiarism. Disciplinary action for academic misconduct is the responsibility of the faculty member assigned to the course. The faculty member is charged with assessing the gravity of any case of academic dishonesty and with giving sanctions to any student involved. The faculty member involved will file a record of the offense and the punishment imposed with the dean of the division, campus dean, and the provost/academic vice president. Any student who has been penalized for academic dishonesty has the right to appeal the judgment or the penalty assessed. Plagiarism “Plagiarism — The attempt to represent the work of another, as it may relate to written or oral works, computer-based work, mode of creative expression (i.e. music, media or the visual arts), as the product of one's own thought, whether the other's work is published or unpublished, or simply the work of a fellow student. 1. When a student submits oral or written work for credit that includes the words, ideas, or data of others, the source of that information must be acknowledged through complete, accurate, and specific references, and, if verbatim statements are included, through use of quotation marks as well. By placing one’s name on work submitted for credit, the student certifies the originality of all work not otherwise identified by appropriate acknowledgements. Documentation of a disability must accompany any request for accommodations. 17. Course Requirements and Grading Criteria: A. Quizzes – will assess competencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 a. BlackBoard quiz of 4-10 questions for EVERY chapter b. Due BEFORE the class meeting we discuss that chapter c. 26 chapter quizzes, worth a total of 228 points B. Scenarios – will assess competencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 a. Daily scenarios will be given b. Graded as Pass/Fail c. Student will be allowed to re-attempt scenarios until passed d. ALL scenarios must be passed to complete course C. Examinations – will assess competencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 a. On BlackBoard b. Will be “open” for 72 hours after we cover the final section of that unit. c. 4 Unit tests, worth 50 points, each d. Final exam, worth 122 points D. Interview/Presentation – will assess competency 1 a. Interview a medical professional who has performed CPR on a patient i. For this project, a medical professional is anyone practicing in any medical or health care field which including emergency response to medical issues, such as a physician, EMT, athletic trainer, lifeguard, or nurse. If you are not sure, please ask. ii. Cannot use any WBU employee for the interview. Get off campus! b. Discuss what happened, the scene, what caused the emergency, etc… c. Share this information with the class on assigned date on syllabus calendar d. Worth 50 points E. 600 Total Points Possible A: 540-600 points B: fewer than 540 points C: fewer than 480 points D: fewer than 420 points F: fewer than 360 points, or did not pass all daily scenarios, or absent at least 25% of class meetings F. Grade Appeals: Students shall have protection through orderly procedures against prejudices or capricious academic evaluation. A student who believes that he or she has not been held to realistic academic standards, just evaluation procedures, or appropriate grading, may appeal the final grade given in the course by using the student grade appeal process described in the Academic Catalog. Appeals may not be made for advanced placement examinations or course bypass examinations. Appeals are limited to the final course grade, which may be upheld, raised, or lowered at any stage of the appeal process. Any recommendation to lower a course grade must be submitted through the Executive Vice President/Provost to the Faculty Assembly Grade Appeals Committee for review and approval.
