Both WASP-1b and WASP-2b orbit about stars brighter than V=12, and are thus ideal targets for HST followup. WASP-1b is probably inflated in a manner similar to HD209458b but is in a closer orbit about the parent, which itself is the earliest-type parent star yet announced for a transiting extrasolar planet. At 0.03 AU from the parent star, WASP-2b is close to the minimum separation at which planets of this mass range are thought to survive. We request DD observations of WASP-1b and WASP-2b, to constrain the masses and radii of both objects to a precision of a few tenths of a percent. Both parent stars have very similar brightnesses to the TrES-1 parent star, thus we will achieve equivalent photometric precision to previous successful observations of TrES-1b. As all further physical investigations (such as interior heating) depend on precise mass- and radiusdeterminations, this investigation is the essential next step in uncovering the physical characteristics of these planets and their parent stars. We have requested 12 orbits, though 9 orbits would provide the minimum acceptable coverage for our program. The consortium will formally announce the discoveries of WASP-1b and WASP-2b on Tuesday 26th September 2006. We ask that all material in this proposal be kept confidential until that date. We can supply the discovery paper on request after this date. 2 Proposal 11072 (STScI Edit Number: 33, Created: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 8:14:38 PM EST) - Overview OBSERVING DESCRIPTION Summary: The primary science goal is to achieve high-S/N (in the region of 5000) relative photometry of the transiting exoplanets WASP-1 and WASP-2. The NICMOS grism allows these bright targets to be observed without immediate saturation of the detector, while admitting a secondary science goal; use of the color information to search for water-features at 1.45um in the transit lightcurve. Our overall strategy follows the successful approach used by Gilliland et al and subsequent investigators for high-S/N observations of HD209458; our science exposures consist of contiguous sequences of NICMOS/NIC3/G141 exposures, with the phasing timed to catch the full transit lightcurve for each target, which requires two visits per target. As this is a major change in instrument from our original ACS obsesrvations,we provide detailed information below. Focus: Note that non-standard focus for NIC3 is adopted, the program requires special commanding as used previously in Gilliland's observations CAL/NIC 9642. To overcome the PSF undersampling of the NIC3 detectors, we opt to defocus the camera. We follow identical focus procedure to program 9642, resulting in FWHM approx 4 pixels.This causes critical sampling of the PSF to be recovered at the cost of reduced spectral resolution. POS_TARG offsets to place the target in the optimum locatio on-detector take into account the offset introduced by this defocus. Expected Counts and Integration Times: using the response peak for G141 of about 7,700 DN/sec/Jy and gain=6.5 e-/DN, the peak predicted count rate from a target of F Jy is 50,000F e-/sec. WASP-1 and WASP-2 are F7V and K1V stars with 2MASS H=10.36, 9.75 respectively, translating to 0.074,0.13 Jy (at 1.66 micron) and thus predicted maximum counts (summed over the spatial profile) of 3700,6500 e-/sec respectively. Evaluation of the spatial profile of an example grism exposure from program 9642 (with identical focus strategy and thus highly similar spatial profile) suggests roughly 18 percent of the flux in a given spatial profile falls within the brightest pixel in that profile; we multiply by 2 to be conservative. So the brightest pixel in a given exposure will have at most 35 percent or so of the source flux at that wavelength. Using the cycle 16 IHB well-depth of 213,200 e- and requiring counts below 50 percent full well depth at any pixel, this focus strategy sets an upper limit on total electrons from the source (at a given wavelength) of 213,200 * 0.5 / 0.35 = 304,000 e- per spatial profile over the whole exposure. We thus opt for 80s and 48s exposures for 3 Proposal 11072 (STScI Edit Number: 33, Created: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 8:14:38 PM EST) - Overview WASP-1 and WASP-2 respectively, corresponding to MULTIACCUM sequence SPARS16, with NSAMP=7 and 5 respectively. (Scaling the total counts of program 9642 by the Hmag difference between HD209458 and WASP-1,2 produces similar results). This will achieve roughly 25 million total e- from each target for each exposure. Safety Orbit: We take two HST orbits before transit in each visit. Previous similar programs on HD209458 show the first orbit is unlikely to be stable enough for high-S/N grism spectroscopy. We thus use the first 35 percent of the visibility interval in the first orbit in each visit to set the focus and take a set of direct images of the target. Direct F150W images will establish the location of the target on the detector; position-variations against this initial position will be correlated out during the analysis (e.g. ISR NICMOS-2003-0001). Direct images in the narrowband continuum filters will be used to constrain the spatial extent of any neighbours as a function of wavelength; this will allow us to rigorously assess the degree of contamination from any fainter neighbouring objects (see also Orientation below). POS_TARG (+14.104" , 22.9883" ) computed differentially from program 9832. That program used identical setup, but placed the direct image at detector position [141,72]. We wish to place the direct image at [169.67,84.11], which puts the dispersion pattern in a region where the detector is cleaner, QE variations are lower, and the entire 1st-order pattern fits on a single chip. This leaves >2" between the edge of the 1st order spectrum and the detector edge to allow for large pointing errors. So, our POS TARG should be (+2.60", +20.53") + (+11.504",+ 2.4583") Dither: were guiding perfectly stable we would not need to dither as we are interested in relative photometry. In practice, we will dither by +/- 0.1pix (equivalent to the estimated guiding error of 0.02'') *during the out-of-transit science orbit only.* Orientation: We have used 2MASS H-band images of the target regions as well as the USNO catalogue to carefully assess the degree of crowding by possible contaminating neighbours. We have specified orientation angles that avoid these neighbours as much as possible. APT indicates that even with these orientation restrictions, the observations will still be schedulable during what remains of Cycle 15. We will iterate this with the PC. Phasing: we have taken the opportunity to improve our phase estimates, using the most recent fits to ground-based lightcurves and spectra (see 4 Proposal 11072 (STScI Edit Number: 33, Created: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 8:14:38 PM EST) - Overview Collier Cameron et al 2006 for method). This introduces a correction of 2-5 minutes to the phase windows in the ACS phase II. The resulting phase windows were shifted a single 96.0-minute HST orbit earlier for each visit to take account of the Safety orbit added to the program along with the switch approval. The phase constraint is set in the special requirements for the first exposure of the first orbit in each visit. Coverage: APT Phase-II suggests that the 3-minute overhead for data-management indicated in the IHB has little if any impact on the science visibility of the target (no 3-minute gaps appear in any science portion of any orbit). ===The following added May 8th 2007:=== Visit 03 dither: We will dither the direct images during the first orbit in this visit to allow improved background estimation when measuring potentially crowding objects. We implement using POS TARGs the pattern A'BA , where A' is the target position, offset by (-0.5pix,-0.5pix), B is a point offset (-3.05",-2.949" in detector coordinates) from the target and in a grot-free region of the detector, and A is the nominal target position. This will allow improved background estimation and some level of intra-pixel sampling for accurate positioning of the target on the detector. Safety Grism Dithers: Unlike previous similar programs, our orbit allocation affords us a single out-of-transit science orbit, rather than two that bracket the transit. Of the two previous similar programs, program 9642 shows position-drift along cross-dispersion of order +/-0.02 pix, while Program 9832 shows rather high position-drift (as much as +/- 0.15 pix). Both previous programs took place before the switch to 2-gyro mode. While our program cross-dispersion dithers are the largest used for a program of this type, it is thus possible that even larger dithers may be warranted to optimise the science return. However, too large a dither can introduce additional errors in the time-domain (Gilliland 2005 HST calib workshop). The interval between visits is not quite long enough for us to use the results from visit 04 to inform the planning of visit 03. We thus dither to -0.2 pix and -0.1 pix during the safety orbit grism exposures, to provide some constraint on the relationship between the effect of larger dithers, and allow a correction to high offset should this be necessary. Gathering of Dithers: We have taken the opportunity to gather the dithers in the out of transit science visit for WASP2 (visit 03 orbit 3 within APT) slightly differently than in visit 04. The new scheme is slightly more efficient - one more science exposure is allowed - and leads to larger contiguous blocks at each pointing, making trends more apparent. 5 Proposal 11072 (STScI Edit Number: 33, Created: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 8:14:38 PM EST) - Overview Extra Visibility: Within APT, there is an unused visibility gap of 400 seconds at the end of the safety orbit. We suspect this gap may be to allow for the defocus operations, which are implemented in APT within a separate dummy orbit (orbit 1). It is not entirely clear at present if the 400 seconds in the safety orbit really does represent unused visibility. We have taken the opportunity to fill this gap with nonlinearity exposures, and have added the _EXTRA_ label to the exposure names for easy removal by the PC if necessary. REAL TIME JUSTIFICATION Visit timing is CRUCIAL. We must sample the contact points at ingress, and egress and wish to sample the entire transit light curve. This constrains the timing of individual visits to observe during transit, and constrains the second visits to each target to observe the gaps in the transits caused by earth occultation. We need phase windows corresponding to 5 mins (rather than the default 15 mins) to guarantee coverage of all four contact points. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS IMPLEMENTATION NOTES: 1) Manual deletion of some NICMOS HOME alignment is necessary 2) Must force the creation of a final HOME 3) May need to extend the Phase Critical window this schedules in This proposal uses standard NICMOS ALIGN exposures to cause a defocus for the observations. The desire is to defocus, perform all science exposures and then return (HOME) to normal focus at the end. For the defocus the mechanisms are to be placed, in absolute terms, in the same positions as the first ALIGN exposure in the NIC3 visits of the NICMOS Focus Monitor. The Focus Monitor uses special commanding and ALIGN exposures to manage the NIC mechanisms while this proposal uses only ALIGN exposures, no special commanding. 6 Proposal 11072 (STScI Edit Number: 33, Created: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 8:14:38 PM EST) - Overview It is necessary to translate the ALIGN parameters in the Focus Monitor into a usable set for this proposal because the two proposals reference different zero points for determining the mechanism motions. The ALIGN optional parameter values in the Focus monitor are relative to mechanical zero where as this proposal must use values based on the nominal NIC3 zero points. Mechanical Zero for the Focus and X & Y tilts is (0, 4, 9) respectively and, at the time of this proposal, the nominal NIC3 zero points are (-8636, -10, -5). The "Focus Monitor (-455, -1, -1) from the Mech Zero points" yields an absolute position of (-455, 3, 8) which can be achieved by using "(+8181, +13, +13) from the Nominal NIC3 Zero points" for this proposal. Due to the usage of the PHASE and NEW OBSET special requirements in this proposal, TRANS will create a HOME which occurs immediately after the ALIGN and would cause the observation to execute at nominal focus, not at the desired defocus. Additionally, TRANS will not create a final HOME because it thinks it already HOMEd the mechanisms. These issues are resolved by using an ALIGN exposure at the very end to force TRANS to create a final HOME and then manually deleting any HOME(s) that occurs between the first ALIGN exposure and this forcebly created final HOME. This allows the mechanisms to stay at the defocus position during all science exposures and then returns them to their nominal focus positions at the very end.
