Is the compound a “typical” chemical, i.e. from
Sigma Aldrich, Fisher Scientific, PraxAir, etc?

Examples: ethanol, perchloroethylene, etc.
Add the compound to Chemical
Inventory. Enter data into all fields.
Describe the chemical name as
fully as possible.
N
Is the compound overtly “industrial” or “chemical” in
nature?
Y
Examples: specialty pastes, degreasers, paints,
adhesives, iso-propyl alcohol, bleach, paint thinner

Are there large quantities of the compound?
Y
Example: 1 gallon of Elmer’s glue

Is compound consumer in nature but used
differently than manufacturer intends?

Example: Using Windex as part of chemical
process?

Is the compound an office or
household consumer item that is
used the way the manufacturer
intends?
Examples:”canned” air, dry erase
board cleaner, correction fluid, etc.
in normal applications.

Add to Chemical Inventory. Enter
manufacturer & product name
under “Chemical Name”. Enter
product number under Vendor’s
Catalog Number.
Do not enter CAS numbers.

Do nothing. This compound
does not need to be entered
into chemical inventory or
have an MSDS.
