Now to him who by the power at work within
us is able to accomplish abundantly far more
than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory
in the church and in Christ Jesus to all
generations, forever and ever, Amen. (EPH
3:20; NRSV)
In Paul's letter to the Ephesians, he offers a
prayer for the readers in which he draws our
attention to the "power at work within us." I
do not keep a daily log of everything going on
in our school - so the newsletters compiled by
Dr. Franklin serve as a periodic reminder of our accomplishments - and I
think you will agree that they are impressive! The reason that we can
accomplish all these things is because the faculty and students who make
up our school are truly empowered by Him. We are empowered
intellectually with expertise in our respective disciplines; we are empowered
with the energy required to sustain our teaching loads while at the same
time mentoring students through various research experiences and personal
growth; and we are empowered by a sense of purpose, an understanding
that what we do through Wayland affects the lives of countless others and
serves His kingdom in so many ways. Certainly, this is not a new revelation
for those of us connected to Wayland - it has always been this way, even
before annual newsletters and the like - and we are only able to compile
this list of accomplishments because of the dedication and hard work of
those who preceded us in service to Him through Wayland.

College life might ordinarily be called a zoo, but this year, Wayland
Baptist University thinks it's more of a circus.
Featuring the theme "Under the Wayland Big Top," the university's
annual Homecoming Weekend is slated for Feb. 25-26 in Plainview.
Various activities are planned to give alumni from all years a chance to
gather, reminisce, introduce their families to the campus and community
News & Events
and enjoy some of their favorite WBU traditions.
This year's event honors the Class of 1961 as the Golden Anniversary
class, with other honor classes ending in 1: 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001.
Classes are encouraged to gather as groups and celebrate memories of
their time at Wayland.
In order to finally reach graduation.

Among many homecoming activities, the School of Mathematics and
Sciences will host a number of special events for our alumni and
students. At 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, the School of Mathematics and
Sciences will host a guest lecture with Dr. Bob Sartain, a 1961 WBU
graduate and retired math professor from Howard Payne University who
formerly taught at Wayland. Dr. Sartain will be speaking on the changes
he's witnessed in the field of mathematics over the last 50 years. Dr.
Sartain spent a combined total of 45 years teaching mathematics at
Baptist universities in Texas.
At 3:30 p.m. on Friday, the School of Math and Sciences will host a
reception for honorees of new endowed scholarships - including
professors emeritus Dr. Harold Reese and Dr. J. Hoyt Bowers and donors
David Milstead and Dr. Glenda Payas - and Dr. Sartain. The event is open
to the public in the foyer of Moody Science Building.
On Saturday, homecoming continues with a breakfast for alumni of the
math and sciences at 8 a.m. in the Mabee Learning Resources Center
atrium.

MAA Bringing Math to the Mainstream
The newly formed Wayland Baptist University chapter of the Mathematics
Association of America is working toward a lofty goal, making
mathematics more applicable to everyday life for non-mathematicians.
To that end, the group held the first of what members hope are
numerous talks discussing "recreational mathematics" last week. The
discussion, led by Dr. Scott Franklin, associate professor of mathematics
and associate dean of the School of Math and Sciences, centered on
using mathematics to speed up board games. The game in question,
Chutes and Ladders, was featured in a similar article in a mathematics
journal.
Franklin, who has three children ages 10 and younger, said the topic had
specific interest to him since he often wonders, "How can I speed this
stupid thing up?" he joked. Franklin loves spending time with his kids,
but playing Chutes and Ladders with his 7-year-old can become tedious
and is not all that intellectually stimulating.
