Faculty Profile Dr. Elise Adamson Prof. of Mathematics/Physics Joachim Mathematics Professorship From the "Herb-arium" Dr. Herb Grover, Dean School of Mathematics and Sciences Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever, Amen. (EPH 3:20; NRSV) In Paul's letter to the Ephesians, he offers a prayer for the readers in which he draws our attention to the "power at work within us." I do not keep a daily log of everything going on in our school - so the newsletters compiled by Dr. Franklin serve as a periodic reminder of our accomplishments - and I think you will agree that they are impressive! The reason that we can accomplish all these things is because the faculty and students who make up our school are truly empowered by Him. We are empowered intellectually with expertise in our respective disciplines; we are empowered with the energy required to sustain our teaching loads while at the same time mentoring students through various research experiences and personal growth; and we are empowered by a sense of purpose, an understanding that what we do through Wayland affects the lives of countless others and serves His kingdom in so many ways. Certainly, this is not a new revelation for those of us connected to Wayland - it has always been this way, even before annual newsletters and the like - and we are only able to compile this list of accomplishments because of the dedication and hard work of those who preceded us in service to Him through Wayland. Dr. Adamson is a Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Wayland. She has a B.S. (Engineering Physics) from Texas Tech, M.S. (Applied Physics) from Texas Tech and a Read More --> Ph.D. (Physics) from Texas Tech. According to Dr. Adamson, "Math and Physics are very closely related, so it is good to be involved in both areas." She teaches courses in Introductory Physics, and many of the math courses for aspiring teachers, as well as Vector Mechanics aimed Formby Grant Gives Wings to Wind Energy Project at pre-engineers. With Dr. Tim Walsh, she co-directs a grant program for area secondary science teachers. To that end, the group held the first of what members hope are numerous talks discussing "recreational mathematics" last week. The discussion, led by Dr. Scott Franklin, associate professor of mathematics and associate dean of the School of Math and Sciences, centered on using mathematics to speed up board games. The game in question, Chutes and Ladders, was featured in a similar article in a mathematics journal. Franklin, who has three children ages 10 and younger, said the topic had specific interest to him since he often wonders, "How can I speed this stupid thing up?" he joked. Franklin loves spending time with his kids, but playing Chutes and Ladders with his 7-year-old can become tedious and is not all that intellectually stimulating. Read More --> In Other News...
