December, 2012 MSCI Monthly Newsletter In This Issue Joanne Bowers Scholarship STEM Conference Ouachite Mountains, AR Creation Care Week Fall News and Events Upcoming Events Faculty Profile Dr. Tim Walsh Dr. Walsh is an associate professor of geology joining the faculty at Wayland Baptist University in Fall 2002. He earned a doctorate in May 2002 from Texas Tech in the area of geology. He also holds a master of science in geology degree from Oklahoma State University and a bachelor of science degree in geology from Phillips University in Oklahoma. From the "Herb-arium" Dr. Herb Grover, Dean School of Mathematics and Sciences Hello Everyone! As the fall semester nears its conclusion it is hard to imagine where the time has gone. Some weeks feel like they go on forever and others fly by! So time is indeed an elusive dimension, as the Psalmists and Peter remind us. But when your sense of purpose and values are grounded in faith in a good and loving God, the efforts expended and accomplishments recorded in our short time matter. From the legacy of Joanne Bowers recognized by an endowed scholarship, to a wonderful and encouraging presentation by Dr. John Blevins as our Homecoming alumni speaker; to participation in scientific conferences and field trips, and coordination of our campus-wide creation care week, the School of Mathematics and Sciences continues to make its mark here in Plainview and, through our graduates, to the world beyond west Texas. The individual news items in this newsletter summarize the impressive major happenings of the past few weeks, so I'd like to take just a few lines and describe upcoming activities that I am sure will make future newsletters as accomplishments. First, through the efforts of Dr. Adam Reinhart and Dr. Andrew Kasner, students from the school and across campus will be taking a mission trip to Honduras over spring break. For more information on their plans, or to donate, click here. Plans are also underway for the 2013 Texas Academy of Sciences meetings that will be held on the campus of Schriener College in Kerrville, TX, the first weekend of March. We anticipate several oral and poster presentations by our students, and maybe even a research proposal or two. Of course, we also look forward to the field experiences we will offer our students while in the Hill Country. Dr. Kasner and I continue to work on plans for a Kenya Studies program for this summer. This is a re-formulated plan from last year that was postponed due to lack of enrollment. If we can get at least 5 students to commit, we -> Read More <- Calendar November 9-11 Geology Field Trip: Santa Fe November 12-16 Creation Care Week November 17 Geology Field Trip: Caprock Canyon November 21-23 Thanksgiving Holiday December 1 Putnam Mathematical Competition December 15 Plainview Graduation Support our programs If anything in this newsletter sparks your interest and you would like to provide your financial support to our students, either by funding specific areas of research or by providing scholarship moneys, there are easy ways for you to give. will spend about 3 weeks in Kenya, using our new Wayland campus at Moffatt Bible College in Kijabe, Kenya, as our base of operations. Students will receive 8 hours of college credit as we will spend several days and nights bush camping while studying the ecosystems and wildlife of east Africa. Several days will also be spent working with Craig Sorley's ministry called Care of Creation, Kenya (click here). We have received one generous gift to help offset travel expenses, but the cost per student is still intimidating - ranging from about $7,500 to about $8,500 per student, depending on how many students sign up. If you would like to donate to this program, please contact me (806-291-1118) or Dr. Kasner (806-2911117). So, we are on the move every day working to prepare our students for success in a changing world. We are grateful for your ongoing prayers and support. And we also wish a wonderful and meaningful Christmas to you and your families. The first stop was at Petit Jean State Park just north of the Ouachita Mountains. There at the park, students learned about the geology and hiked to see a natural land bridge, rock fall, sedimentary features, and the spectacular Cedar Falls. They then traveled south to Lake Ouachita State Park where students were led on a geologic float tour. Students kayaked to see various geologic structures and learn about the geologic history of the Ouachita Mountains. During the remaining portion of the trip, there were several opportunities to collect and learn the importance of many varieties of minerals. Collected minerals included: pyrite cubes, quartz crystals, rutile, magnetite, and the rare wavellite. Students also had the opportunity to visit the Martin Marietta Mine in the Magnet Cove area. At the mine, students were taught how nepheline syenite is mined and processed to supply aggregrate material for paving industries in the southern parts of Arkansas and northern Louisiana. Creation Care Week: November 12-16 Creation Care Week 2011 Dr. Grover, along with other faculty and administration, helped Wayland's initiative to become more energy efficient by implementing Creation Care Week as an annual event. Each day of the week Dr. Grover sent devotional emails to the Plainview campus. To view the devotionals click here. This year Dr. Fred Van Dyke joined us as our special guest for the week. Dr. Van Dyke is the Executive Director for the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies. He was the former Director of the Department of biology at Wheaton College and the Director of Environmental Studies Program. He has taught on numerous issues of environmental science and is a commended author. His latest book, Between Heaven and Earth: Christian Perspectives on Environmental Protection, was published in 2010. Click here to read more about Dr. Van Dyke. The week began on Monday, November 12th with a combined field trip to the Ogallala Aquifer in Nazareth, TX. Then on Tuesday Dr. Van Dyke spoke to the Faith and Science class at 3:10. On Wednesday, November 14th, Dr. Van Dyke spoke at chapel then participated in an informal question and answer session. He also gave a brief seminar in room 110, Moody Science Buidling at 3:00p.m. which was open to everyone. The week was concluded with an electronic recycling clean-up on Saturday, November 17, from 9a.m.-2p.m. at the Plainview City Recycling Center. Homecoming: October 19-20 On Friday, October 19th the School's guest alumni speaker, Dr. John Blevins, gave a seminar for students and faculty regarding the importance of his Wayland degree and how it helped prepare him for medical school. He also spoke about his recent medical mission trip to Uganda. Following the seminar was a reception for Joanne Bowers and the completion of the endowed scholarship. Then on Saturday, October 20th the School successfully held its annual breakfast for alumni and faculty. American Chemical Society The ACS chapter was awarded with the Certificate of Acheivement Award for "their exceptional service throughout the 2011-2012 academic year". This is the second year in a row that they have received this award under Dr. Gray's tutelage, and the third time overall. All of the students involved in the chapter, including the chapter's president Trevor Burrow, have worked very hard, including their most recent service of the homeschool chemistry enhancement program. Upcoming Events This Saturday, December 1, Wayland will field a team competing in the Putnam Mathematical Competition, an annual mathematics competition for undergraduate students designed to test originality and technical competence. Team members Trevor Burrow, Anna Kite, and Rick Ross will independently tackle a dozen questions in two three-hour sittings. During Spring Break, March 11-15, Dr. Adam Reinhart and Andrew Kasner will be taking 14 WBU students to Tegucigalpa, Honduras for a medical mission trip.
