Safe Lifting

Improper lifting techniques can increase your risk for injury. Proper lifting can help reduce the risk for back injuries, muscle pulls, and other injuries. Before lifting an object, decide whether or not it requires a team lift. Be sure to use a dolly or ask for help if you need to.

When lifting items at home or at work keep the following tips in mind.

Do:

Keep your back straight or slightly arched

Bend at the knees

Use your legs to carry the weight

Avoid slippery or uneven surfaces

Team lift heavy objects or bulky loads

Stretch before lifting

Plant your feet shoulder width apart

Wear proper shoes

Stand as close to the object as possible

Do Not:

Twist while lifting or carrying an object

Bend at the waist or arch your back

Lift more than you can handle

Lift if you have or have had back trouble

Lift heavy objects over your head
