Searches on the World Wide Web to find information on Internet issues, and the ramifications of the Internet on personal and professional lives. Prerequisites: COSC2311 Required Textbook: BOOK AUTHOR ED YEAR PUBLISHER Internet Comprehensive Schneider 9th 2013 Cengage Learning ISBN# UPDATED 9781-111529116 Spring 14 Optional Materials: Lecture, case study and practical exercises will be used as appropriate. Information other than in the text will be made available as necessary in class. Current events will be discussed during class period. Course Outcome Competencies: • Effectively discuss the history of the internet, describe the main structure of the internet and successfully connect to the internet. • Use different web browsers to access web sites on the internet for the purpose of research, pleasure and business related transactions. • Effectively setup and use email applications and web mail applications. • Conduct research on the internet via search engines and directions and discern the validity of the information source. • Successfully download and install applications/utility software then demonstrate the ability to use that software by completing other internet related activities. • Successfully access List Server, utilizing information obtained to better understand internet technologies. • Effectively access and utilize chat and instant messenger. • Compare and contrast the differences and advantages of Wired Network vs. Wireless • Discuss and analyze the importance of Internet Security, identify and utilize which will protect computer system from: spy ware, Ad ware, Viruses, Worms, Trojans, etc, • Compare and contrast Ecommerce with physical store fronts. Attendance Requirements: Attendance and oral participation are mandatory. All absences must be explained to the instructor, who will determine whether to omitted work may be made up. Any student who misses 25 percent or more of the regularly scheduled class meetings will receive a grade of F in the course. You will be expected to keep up, or ahead, of the class schedule and assignments. Come prepared for quizzes, exams and discussion of assignments for every class. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to inform me in advance of any problems, so that an alternative might be worked out. You will only be allowed to make up work early if it is pre-approved with the instructor. If you have special learning needs please let me know ahead of time.
