A Message from Dean Jessica Bailey
The week marked the beginning of the
second summer session. A limited number
of classes are being held in the R.J. Reynolds

evening, Monday through
Thursday, for the next five
weeks. The School of
Business and Economics is
offering graduate and

information systems,
business communications, business ethics,
economics, finance, health law, strategic
management, and quantitative methods of
business. It takes real dedication to teach
during the dog days of summer, so a special
thank you is extended to Instructors
Stephenson, Mathiyalakan, Karagiannis,
Namit, Jones, Joseph, and Theophilus.
Preliminary work has begun on the
faculty office renovations that are planned
for this summer in the R.J. Reynolds Center.
Observers have seen Ms. Donna Presnell of
Facilities Management in the building, doing
the planning and scheduling work that
precede any construction projects. Let me
publicly thank her for her efforts.
Also, this week, work has continued on
the coordination of the four monitors
mounted in the corridors of the first floor of
the Reynolds building. Mr. Ben Greene and
Mr. Richard Edwards have been working
tirelessly to assure that these media outlets
are functioning properly for the
dissemination of news and announcements
for the SBE stakeholders who enter the
building.

Alumni Profile—Brian W. Davis
Brian W. Davis, a 2009 graduate of
Winston-Salem State University and
Charlotte native, remains loyal to the
Rams tradition by making generous
contributions to the School of Business
and Economics annual fund campaign
and by serving as the WSSU Richmond
(Virginia) Metropolitan Alumni Chapter
President. In Richmond, Brian works as
a Technology Analyst for Atria Client
Services where he is responsible, as a
member of the Teradata Warehousing
Team, for extracting, transforming and
loading data from a variety of source
systems into the corporate Enterprise
Data Warehouse (EDW). The EDW data
is then used by Altria to make $2.5
billion in trade payments, allocate price
and product promotions and enable
executive business insights.
As part of his commitment to WSSU,
Brian serves as a member of the
recruiting team at Altria, providing
summer internship opportunities to our
computer science and management
information systems majors. As Brian
can confirm, these internships provide
opportunities for
exceptional students to
achieve appointments
to permanent positions
following graduation.
In his case, he interned
in Information Services
with Altria in Richmond
during two consecutive
Brian Davis
summers. After moving
to Richmond, Brian
continued his education at the Strayer
University Henrico Campus, completing
his MBA in Information Systems
Management in December, 2012.
Brian has become actively involved
in the Richmond, Virginia community.
He works as a volunteer for Hands On
Greater Richmond, an organization that
pairs volunteers with community nonprofits so that a greater variety of
projects can be completed. In addition,
he volunteers for the Greater Richmond
Meals on Wheels and the YMCA Bright
Beginnings programs. Bright Beginnings
provides eligible low income students
with new clothes, shoes and a backpack
full of supplies in advance of their
school year. He also serves on the Xi
Delta Lambda graduate chapter of the
Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity .
During his tenure at Winston-Salem
State, Brian received the Dean’s Award
as a Management Information Systems
major, was a member of the Beta Iota
Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha
fraternity, and worked in the School of
Business and Economics as a Computer
Lab Assistant while pursuing his degree.
In addition to his busy work
schedule at Altria, Brian enjoys the
opportunity to “hang out” with his coworkers and fellow WSSU alumni and
students who are located in the
Richmond area.
