Number of Credits: 0.5 Continuing Education Unit (CEU), 5 clock hours, $37.50, enroll by April 26
Description:
The Colorado TESOL Spring Conference (2014) is a one-day professional development session with the following
theme: "Building Academic Vocabulary: Helping ELLs Access Complex Text." It will be held on Saturday, April 12
from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Zalman Center in Colorado Springs. Participants must register for the conference
at: http://www.colorado.edu/iec/cotesol/
This interactive workshop will be geared towards educators and administrators alike who work with ELLs. The
knowledge, strategies and skills gained will be applicable to all age and proficiency levels. The session will provide
useful strategies on how to develop students’ academic vocabulary, which will lead to improvement of students’
reading comprehension, as well as their listening, speaking and writing skills. In this half-day conference,
participants will: 1) Experience and practice at least 10 practical, research-based strategies to build academic
vocabulary for accessing complex text, 2) Learn which words make the biggest impact on student achievement
and how to focus on these words in text, 3) Acquire strategies for building background knowledge, and 4) Practice
close reading strategies and apply them to your classroom.
The conference will feature a highly sought after, well-respected professional in the field of Language
Development: Ms. Beth Skelton, M.A. Ed. Ms. Skelton has been a favorite presenter of many Fall CoTESOL
conventions. She is an international consultant who specializes in coaching educators who work with English
Language Learners. She has taught English and German at most grade and ability levels since 1988 and is also the
author of Putting it Together, student and teacher materials for English as a second language that incorporate the
TPR Storytelling© method. From 2010-2013, she coordinated the English as an Additional Language Program at
the Bavarian International School north of Munich, Germany and currently consults with local and international
schools to enhance instruction for all language learners. On a personal note, Beth is the proud mother of a
trilingual daughter.
