It will be held on Saturday, April 12 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Zalman Center in Colorado Springs. Participants must register for the conference at: http://www.colorado.edu/iec/cotesol/ This interactive workshop will be geared towards educators and administrators alike who work with ELLs. The knowledge, strategies and skills gained will be applicable to all age and proficiency levels. The session will provide useful strategies on how to develop students’ academic vocabulary, which will lead to improvement of students’ reading comprehension, as well as their listening, speaking and writing skills. In this half-day conference, participants will: 1) Experience and practice at least 10 practical, research-based strategies to build academic vocabulary for accessing complex text, 2) Learn which words make the biggest impact on student achievement and how to focus on these words in text, 3) Acquire strategies for building background knowledge, and 4) Practice close reading strategies and apply them to your classroom. The conference will feature a highly sought after, well-respected professional in the field of Language Development: Ms. Beth Skelton, M.A. Ed. Ms. Skelton has been a favorite presenter of many Fall CoTESOL conventions. She is an international consultant who specializes in coaching educators who work with English Language Learners. She has taught English and German at most grade and ability levels since 1988 and is also the author of Putting it Together, student and teacher materials for English as a second language that incorporate the TPR Storytelling© method. From 2010-2013, she coordinated the English as an Additional Language Program at the Bavarian International School north of Munich, Germany and currently consults with local and international schools to enhance instruction for all language learners. Complete the Certificate of Attendance found in the CoTESOL Conference program and submit to Stephanie Dewing upon completion of conference attendance on April 12, 2014. There will be a table set up at the Zalman Center to submit these forms.** 3.
