Table Hosting For The Networking/Etiquette Workshop WHAT ARE TABLE HOSTS? Table hosts are experienced professionals with valuable insight about interviewing skills and networking techniques. Hosts provide added support to participants as they learn more about interacting in typical business environments. WHAT DO TABLE HOSTS DO? Marketing yourself is not an easy job, however it is critical that you seize the opportunities that come your way and not let any slip past you. As a table host you will advise the participants on how to effectively maneuver within an interview. In addition to marketing key skills, participants will need to know the appropriate topics open for discussion during a meal, and the relevant questions to ask. The following is a list of tips and questions that you can utilize for supporting the participants at the N.E.W. Everyone else orders a beer/wine…and you? Is it ok to blow your nose at the table? Swears or uses foul language…you should? You don’t feel comfortable eating properly and interviewing…you should? If you’re not sure, err on the side of caution and conservativeness. What ever you do, do it with confidence. Be yourself in the interview, not the person you idealize. What exactly do you talk about over a meal? Your not sure if this is a time to relax or stay on guard…you should? What questions, if any, do you ask? What do you order? If you’re not hungry, what do you do? If you normally pray before eating, what should you do in this situation? If you taste something that is really nasty, how do you dispose of it? WHY ARE TABLE HOSTS IMPORTANT? Typically, participants feel confident about their skills going into the N.E.W. session, however an actual interview meal may present a set of obstacles beyond our support and advice. It’s for that reason alone that Table Hosts are essential. Hosts bring a variety of experiences and insight to the table that can be very useful to the participants. Having a plan and being prepared are two totally different concepts—be prepared at all times. “Everyone has a plan…, until they get hit,” (Mike Tyson 2002).
